 JugglerGREETINGS FROM JEAN STEEL......

Just a short note this time.

I sincerely want to thank you for allowing me in your in-box each month; letting me share items that make you think, that give you ideas to help make changes to your life - bringing you more joy - or even just making you smile. And those of you who take the time to send me notes, BIG HUGS to you all.

I appreciate you. Hope 2011 brings the happiness you all deserve.

New Year's Resolutions
The Happiness Project
2011

Gretchen Rubin of "The Happiness Project" has a great list of questions to help you make better New Year's Resolutions. I especially like the first one, shouldn't we ask ourselves that on a daily basis?

  • What would make me happier?"
  • What is a concrete action that would bring about change?
  • Am I a 'yes' resolver or a 'no' resolver?"
  • Am I starting small enough?"
  • How am I going to hold myself accountable?

 Benefits of Assertiveness
 Assertive Woman
I am speaking next week in Indianapolis and Phoenix (you might find it amusing that it is 55 degrees here and I am sitting practically ON my space heater, hope it won't be colder in Indy!) on one of my favorite topics - Learning to be Assertive. While creating my PowerPoint, I found this wonderful article by Rex Wallace on what he feels are the three core benefits of assertiveness. I love it and wanted to share...

1. Assertive people LIVE intentionally. Deep down, we all know what we want. But knowing what we want is useless if we don't act on it, as it is if we act on it at the expense of others. Being assertive empowers us to act to achieve our desires without simultaneously destroying our colleague's dream.

2. Assertive people LOVE intentionally. If you're assertive, or if you start training yourself to be, you will experience deeper love. You will love more strongly and tenderly...at the same time.

3. Assertive people LEAVE intentionally. Whether it's a dead-end job or an abusive relationship, the more assertive you are, the less likely you will be the one hanging around to lock up at night.

Great food for thought.

I love organizations where you can donate a small sum and feel like you make a difference. 100 Friends is one such organization.

In 1989, while touring India, Marc Gold met Thinlay, a Tibetan refugee, who invited him to his home. Thinlay's wife, Tsering, welcomed him but kept holding her ears-she was suffering from a painful, deadly infection. Gold found her a physician and bought the antibiotic she needed. It cost just $1-and saved Tsering's life. Then Gold spent $35 on a hearing aid so she could return to work and her son could go to school. "When I pressed the switch to turn on the hearing aid, her burst of joy burned into my brain," Gold recalls. "I was thunderstruck, realizing I could restore her hearing for a relative pittance. I thought you had to be wealthy to do such things."

The purpose of life is a life of purpose.  ~Robert Byrne

I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world.  This makes it hard to plan the day.  ~Elwyn Brooks White

Free Cool Thing #1

work rave

When I am on the computer it seems like I am often in an alternative universe. I power out on a project, and eventually realize it has been hours that I have been sitting there in one position and I am stiff and sore.

I found this wonderful website, a Dutch company that offers the following, "Workrave is a program that assists in the recovery and prevention of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). The program frequently alerts you to take micro-pauses, rest breaks and restricts you to your daily limit."

I downloaded it and customized it for my needs. I set mini for mini-breaks every 15 minutes to stretch my neck and do some quick eye exercises and then every hour longer breaks, where they offer you great exercises and stretches you can do at your desk.

I love inspiring photography; looking at pictures can really evoke strong emotions for me. I wanted to include some inspirational photos of the year in this newsletter, so spent time looking at the over 100 photos of the year from Life magazine. To sum it up in a word? Depressing. Some horrific things happened in 2010, captured on film. I decided instead to post few of my favorites......

Nursing and Social Media

Last week a community college student in Kansas was expelled for Facebook photo. According to Matt Campbell of the Kansas City Star, "A nursing student at Johnson County Community College is stunned to find herself booted out of school just months before graduation. Her offense: Posting on Facebook a photograph of herself posing with a human placenta in class. Doyle Byrnes, who had expected to graduate in May and begin working as a registered nurse in the fall, is now in federal court seeking an injunction against Johnson County Community College. The 22-year-old woman claims her future earnings potential in her chosen profession is at stake because of what she calls "a momentary lapse in judgment." A dean at the school calls it "a lesson hard learned."

Careerbuilder.com writes, "According to a 2009 study by Internet security firm Proofpoint, 8% of companies with more than 1,000 employees have fired someone for social media actions -- a figure that is double what was reported in 2008. Yet it probably comes as no surprise that Facebook firings are on the rise. Cases of employers firing employees for social media slip-ups have been consistent in the news over the past few years. Whether you think it is fair or not, it seems as if Facebook postings are fair grounds for termination at many companies. With that in mind, post at your own risk."
