CONGRATULATIONS!

TO ALL THE MEMBERS FROM THE YOUTH ARTS GROUP FOR YOUR COMMITMENT AND INSPIRATIONAL HARD WORK

The Youth Arts Group is not only an inspiration for our community, but it is also a good example for all youth. Each of our members is truly committed to creating positive change, to continuing to advocate for and to representing the voice for those brothers and sisters that are being oppressed - the farmworkers.                                                                                                               I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our precious college interns Rachel and Grace for all the hard work that they offer to our community.                                                 Finally, THANK YOU to all our sponsors and allies for your ongoing support and for sharing our journey with us.                                                                                                                                      Andres Chamorro, YAG Coordinator

Some accomplishments from May, June and July:

  • YAG members met every Friday night to discuss creative ways to respond to the challenges that they face in their communities. Our Gender Violence, Health Care, and Farmworkers' Rights committees met weekly to strategize and implement their objectives.

o    From May 20 - June 8, we exhibited our 'Angel of Hope' sculpture at the Presbyterian Church in Beacon.

In June, YAG members participated in the Annual Walkathon, the "Pepsi Challenge" and as a result YAG participated in the creation of a short promotional video directed by Ilene Cutler. Here is the link for the video:

    • All YAG members did individual fundraising to support the costs of our end-of-year trip, which took place from June 28-July 1.
    • We visited the Maine College of Art (MECA) as well as a youth organization called Cultivating Community - Boyd Street Urban Farm - We talked about environmental justice and teaching youth empowerment and leadership through making sustainable food choices.

    • We met Richard's family and the family of Edith Hernandez.
    • We camped, relaxed, and completed our Annual Program Evaluation.

This was a great trip - relaxing and educational- well deserved by all YAG members.

o    This year we had two members graduate from High School: Joanna and Elsa. Both will be attending college in the fall and plan to continue in YAG. Congratulations!

o    After successfully completing workshops in how to apply for a job, we had 8 YAG members apply and get accepted for Internships at RMM. They have now completed their training and are working in the following areas: Day Camp, Gender Violence, and Art-a-thon.

  • YAG members are also participating in Leadership Academy workshops. Topics so far include Movie: Which Way Home, College Preparation, Doing and Using Research, and Media Literacy: Finding the Good Stuff.
  • 3 YAG members presented our program and our experience at the conference in Peru to the Annual Presbyterian Meeting at the Holmes Center. A representative from YEG - Arina - also did a wonderful presentation about YEG.
  • Jesenia and I attended the premiere of the documentary film "The Harvest/La Cosecha," which highlights the plight of child farmworkers and their families in the USA. This is a spectacular film which must be seen far and wide. The premiere took place in NYC on July 21. We met and spoke with one of the producers and the director.

YOUTH ECONOMIC GROUP NEWS
"We are having a very productive summer in YEG. There have been a lot of positive things, such as greeting new apprentices for the program  and starting production
of our bags. Taylor and Joel came to our apprentice orientation on Wednesday and all of us had a fun day getting to know each other. We have also just finished setting up our studio in the First Presbyterian Church in Liberty and it is a beautiful two room space. One room is a studio (now darkroom/ light sensitivity equipped!!) and the other is a design/ meeting room.

Planning in the kitchen
The people at the church are very organized and helpful.  On Saturday we had our first real production day and began to test dye colors and techniques and dyed 22 bags. It is a start!
We also cleaned our screens and prepared our emulsion solution. It was our first darkroom experience and it was very exciting.
YEG Purple bags
Dyed purple bags!
Another very exciting thing this week was Irina's experience delivering the speech at the First Presbytery event. I felt euphoric when I called her that night and she told me it went great and I could hear the pride and enthusiasm in her voice. I felt proud that night, and also realized how many of us can really feel proud of that accomplishment. Her, Jillian for this past year of support. YEG and YAG for their counsel, Andres for that night, Richard, you Laura for all of your work, that woman for shouting out in the audience which Irina loved, her mom, everyone at RMM. Pretty amazing. Probably one of my favorite experiences so far with RMM and for that and more I am grateful." Katia, current Fellow, former intern

"Wayne County Looks Forward to International Pianist for Summer Concert"

At 3:00 pm on 16 June, 2011, the United Methodist Church in Sodus will be visited

by a  very special guest: internationally renowned concert pianist Gerson Arvelo.

Flying all the way from the Dominican Republic, Seņor Arvelo will perform at a

at special summer concert put on by Rural & Migrant Ministry, designed to

bring together Wayne County's diverse local and migrant families.

Seņor Arvelo was 8 years old when he began playing with the National Symphony

Orchestra of the Dominican Republic.  Since then he has played in concerts all

over the world-including concerts for past U.S presidents.  Now, he is coming

to Wayne County specifically to support the farmworker community in their

struggle for justice.

One aim of the concert is to celebrate all the work that farmworkers do for the

state of New York, another aim is to increase awareness in the community about

the working rights that farmworkers are denied-rights like a day of rest,

disability insurance, overtime pay, and collective bargaining.  The concert is

open to all with no cover charge, but donations are welcome.

All concert proceeds will benefit Rural & Migrant Ministry's Youth Summer

Leadership Program.  Now in its second year, the summer program (free for

children of farmworkers) uses various forms of art to explore topics like social

justiceand teach important leadership skills and public speaking." Timothy, Intern

arvelo

On a blistering hot Saturday in July the best ticket in the area was in a Methodist Church in Sodus . In this small village a noted world class concert pianist gave of his talent, his faith and his caring  to assist in raising funds for Rural & Migrant Ministry's  summer camp for rural worker's middle school children. Gerson Arvelo from the Dominical Republic blended classical works by Bach, Chopin and Mendelssohn with hymns and jazz to an audience which was from a mix of cultures and countries. kids eating

The concert was followed by a fiesta of music and food at St John's Episcopal Church

Arvelo teaching

Two days later the concert artist was at the Liturgia Worker Educations Center in Lyons, NY doing what he also has come to love - teaching young people about music, and helping them become better at producing music. He knows first-hand that music has the ability to transform lives and bridge cultures and customs.

Both with the concert audience and with the children Arvelo builds bridges to bring people together to create better understanding and communication using music which transcends language.

Also:

"The first edition of the ESL program has been completed. It currently consists of 16 lessons dealing with everything from introducing oneself to using a telephone to driving a car. The program was developed with the goal of teaching survival language skills. The seasonal farmworker does not have the time to begin learning the raw basics of the English language. They need survival skills. These sixteen lessons will give migrant farmworkers the ability to have a voice and a say in their day-to-day life." Megan, Intern

SUMMER CAMP WISH LIST...IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO HELP!!

Donations of funds are the most welcome of gifts.  As we prepare for this year's day programs and overnight camp, there are many needs for art materials and the support of the artists that use them.

During these difficult economic times, we have discovered a great need for these children and youth to have school supplies.  Therefore, our wish list again this year would be to collect 200 School Kits that can be given to each young person at the conclusion of the various programs they are participating in. Summer Day Programs will be held during July in the Mid-Hudson Valley, in Lyons located in the Finger Lakes Region, and our newly formed group in Sullivan County will be attending a special week-long program at Skidmore College - watch the Back to School Sales for more reasonable buys.

These kits should include:

2 composition or spiral notebooks

2 sturdy (2) pocket folders

A package of notebook paper

A box of Crayola primary color markers

A pencil box/envelope that includes:

1 package of #2 pencils (preferably Ticonderoga brand)

An eraser and pencil sharpener

A ruler

3-6 ball point pens

A school scissors

2 glue sticks

A package of notebook paper

A package of construction paper

**Please note: we do not need crayons for the kits!

Each completed kit should be placed in a large plastic zip lock bag.  Kits should be delivered to the RMM Office by August 10th.

If you have questions, please give us a call at 845-485-8627.

SLEEPING BAGS are still needed for our various youth groups throughout the year as they travel for educational experiences and to give presentations at churches, schools and other special events.
