YAG Delegation YOUTH ARTS GROUP IN PERU!!!!

Four representatives of the Youth Arts Group of   Rural & Migrant Ministry were invited to Peru and  presented at the JOINING HANDS (Uniendo Manos) Youth Conference in Lima Peru in January 2011.  The Conference welcomed some 100 young leaders (ages 16-29) representing youth organizations in Peru, Bolivia and the United States.

Joining Hands is a program of the Presbyterian Hunger Program that fights the root causes of hunger by sparking the formation of networks in developing countries. The theme of this Conference was Water as a Basic Human Right.  The youth that came together from around Peru and Bolivia are all working on initiatives to address the need for clean water. The Youth Arts Group (YAG) was invited to share their experiences in working for human rights by using the arts to bring about change.

In other YAG news:

Student artwork that focuses on breaking down racial and class barriers was on display in the lobby gallery of the Newburgh Free Library from January 6 to February 5, 2011. The artwork was created by Rural and Migrant Ministry's Youth Arts Group (YAG), a multicultural group of Hudson Valley high school students who come together and use art to create change in their lives and communities. "The themes found in these paintings, murals and statues are aimed at breaking the barriers that divide our society. They also look at negative influences on our youth and share the voices of farm workers and factory workers," said Andres Chamorro, Youth Empowerment Coordinator, artist, educator and activist who has led the Youth Arts Group of the Rural & Migrant Ministry.  Art fir Change Poster

Angel of Protection Sculpture is a 3 D mixed media project designed to help the workers and show them that they aren't alone.  Additional art pieces include a farmworkers' rights banner, a giant skeleton that represents the body of a female farmworker and her unborn child who has died from overwork and the effects of pesticides and Giant Masks that were created by members of YAG to battle the social injustices that farmworkers face every day in order to obtain equal rights. Students used this artistic medium to portray political issues that affect marginalized and disadvantaged communities.

YOUTH ECONOMIC EDUCATION GROUP YEG NEWS!

The nine YEG members from Sullivan County, NY are currently planning an educational overnight trip to Massachusetts in late February to visit the Equal Exchange cooperative business, the oldest co-op/fair trade business in the USA. YEG is looking forward to a tour of the facility that is known for its chocolate and coffee products. The group is expecting to bring back new ideas and inspiration for planning their own YOUTH RUN COOPERATIVE in Sullivan County coming this summer. They are presently fine-tuning their business and leadership skills, conducting marketing research, studying the needs of the local community and analyzing the local economic situation in order to formulate their own Business Plan.

YEG is also diligently working on plans for their 1st annual Valentine's Day Sale taking place on February 10th at the Sullivan County Government Center.

They are planning to sell beautiful handmade friendship bracelets and yummy rice krispie treats. The project is completely YOUTH RUN from the set up of the goods and packaging of the items, to how they would like to introduce themselves and YEG's brand new image to the local community. All profits will go toward the start up Business Fund for The Youth Economic Group.

Dear Friends,

Here is a list of things we still need to make Liturgia complete. Ideally it would be great if we could find a volunteer to coordinate the furnishing of a room. That way the room would look nice and not like a hodge-podge of stuff!  There are three rooms that we need to complete.

Front bedroom:  3 single bed frames , matching bed-spreads, 3 complimentary dressers

a wooden desk, and a nice rug

Up-stairs lounge: A futon couch (with frame), 2 complimentary easy chairs, a cabinet to hold a T.V. / stereo etc, and a nice rug

Back bedroom: queen size frame, queen size box spring (we have the mattress), dresser, and a

small wooden desk

Misc. items : Floor lamps, table lamps, blankets (queen and single), snow shovel, folding lawn chairs, picnic table umbrella w/stand, basketball hoop (free-standing), ping pong table (on wheels), small round table with two matching chairs, mirrors, towel rack, micro-wave

Also: Guitars, and a nice electric portable keyboard

Thank you!

VEHICLES NEEDED!

Can you donate a car or a mini-van?  RMM needs vehicles in good working condition.
Also:

The Liturgia Rural Workers Education Center in Lyons, New York is in need of a free or inexpensive van, because we offer rides to the farmworkers and their family members who will be participating in programs at Liturgia.  If you have a van or mini-van in good working condition that you'd like to donate, or could sell to RMM for a reasonable price, please let us know and please spread the word about this to others.  Being able to provide transportation to Liturgia will make an enormous difference in the lives of the farmworkers, as they are often so isolated and unable to leave their migrant camps easily. Thank you!
