RMM Notes
October 2009

Embracing the Fierce Urgency of Now It's National Hispanic Heritage Month
National Hispanic Heritage Month began on Sept. 15 and continues through Oct. 15. It is a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States. This year's theme is Embracing the Fierce Urgency of Now, a phrase borrowed from Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech. During the coming weeks, we urge the New York State Senate to Embrace the Fierce Urgency of Now by bringing the Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act to the floor for a vote in order to end the shameful legal exclusions that for too long have denied farmworkers equal rights. |

Across New York During the Month of October People from Many Different Backgrounds Will Gather for...
A Statewide Vigil for Farmworker Human Rights

In the 1930s . . . in the midst of the Jim Crow era . . . farmworkers
were excluded under New York Labor Law from basic human rights, including a
day of rest, overtime pay and protection while bargaining collectively. Now, in 2009, the New York State
Senate can right this wrong, and all of New York can feel the freedom of the
yoke of injustice being removed. Join Us!

YAG Report
Youth Arts Group Reports an Active Fall
By Andres Chamorro
We have 11 active members in the Youth Arts Group; two
members are currently in college and are part of the group.
We have three college interns working with YAG. Two of them
are our wonderful and inspiring interns from last year, John and
Kristina.
On Sept. 25, we had an important meeting in which
members from YAG presented our program and all parents shared their testimonies
about the benefits of the group to new applicants and their
parents.
One of our important activities is our annual recruitment. Recently, we had a good group of nine applicants. The presentations were
acceptable for some of them, and a few were really good. Another three
applicants were scheduled to present on Friday, Oct. 9. After
that, YAG members will decide and choose the new members.
We have space for nine applicants, and we may have 11
applicants in total.
We have a powerful group led by
the Rev. Richard Witt, two great interns Argelia and
Lillian, and our impressive YAG members: Stephan, Elsa,
Joana and Valeria that is working hard in creating our
new entrepreneurial program, YAG Funds.
(Led by the Rev. Richard Witt, two
great interns Argelia and Lillian, and our impressive
YAG members: Stephan, Elsa, Joana and Valeria. This program is getting more solid every
time.

Christmas is coming...
RMM, Daughters of Sarah gear up for annual sale
This year's annual Christmas Store, sponsored by RMM and
the Daughters of Sarah, is scheduled on Saturday, Dec. 19.
As has been our custom, gifts
collected for the Christmas Store must be new (please leave the
price tag on them). This allows parents to
shop for the gift(s) that they know their child(ren) have been dreaming of and
what parent doesn't find joy in giving that special gift!
Suggested
gifts:
- Toys, games and books
(some in Spanish) for all ages - Sports equipment - basketballs, footballs, soccer balls
- Dolls should be
multi-cultural
- Gifts for teenagers
should include jewelry
- Clothing should be new
and seasonal
If shopping and/or the delivering of gifts is
difficult, we welcome cash donations and will do the shopping for you. Checks
should be made payable to: Rural & Migrant Ministry with "Christmas Store" in the memo section.
Families are treated to a wonderful Holiday Dinner
and children participate in holiday activities while parents shop. The
singing of carols adds to the festivities.
Proceeds from the Christmas
Store help support a special weekend retreat for the Daughters of Sarah
and rural women in the Hudson Valley. If you have questions or would
like to find out ways to help, please call Jane at (845) 485-8627.

Meditation
"We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children." -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
