RMM NOTES

(News From Rural & Migrant Ministry)

                               January 2009!!!

Mission

Rural and Migrant Ministry works for the creation of a just rural New York State by:
  • Nurturing leadership
  • Standing with the disenfranchised, especially farmworkers and rural workers
  • Changing unjust systems and structures
Dear Partners,

I want to take a moment to express our deep gratitude to all of you for your support of Rural and Migrant Ministry during the past few months.  During these most difficult times, when so many are finding that they must cut back, your continued support enabled us to be ever more present in the lives of the disenfranchised rural people of New York. This is especially important as many of these brothers and sisters are finding life all the more challenging.  We will continue to honor your belief in, and support of, us - by finding the most effective way to stand up and ensure the just treatment of rural workers. And in doing so, in this time of fear we will strive to be beacons of hope.

Thank you for your partnership - We couldn't do it with out you.

Peace

Richard Witt

Happy New year to all our supporters!

In December I had the opportunity to travel to Ecuador with my family to visit family and friends, and also to work with underserved children. You can find more information about my trip at www.semillaarts.org.

During my absence, YAG participated in the following events, doing presentations and supporting RMM programs:

December:
  • December 6- RMM Women's Conference
  • December 13- YAG participated in a Workshop with Ed Sermier, called "Dealing with Money," and the Toy Store, organized by the Daughters of Sarah.
  • December 10- YAG participated in two social justice events: a conference in New York City with Jordan Wells and another in Monticello with Rev. Richard Witt

January:

  • January 3 and 4 - YAG had an overnight trip to St. Mark's Episcopal Church near Greenwich Village, New York City. YAG participated in the Mass with prayers and sang with the Church's musical group.  In the afternoon we attended the Three Kings' Day Celebration.  We'd like to thank all the wonderful people from St. Mark's for making us feel at home, especially Jeannine Otis.

Future Activities:

  • YAG will participate in a Coins for Change event to be held in Cornwall on Sunday, January 25th.
  • On January 27th, YAG will participate in a Presbyterian Gathering in New York.
  • YAG will be working on four themes this semester:  Gender Violence, Farmsworkers, Funds for Undocumented Students, and YAG Bank.
  • We are organizing a fundraising event for YAG called the "Art-A-Thon," to be held in April.

We Sure Could Use Your Help!!

Here at Rural & Migrant Ministry we have been blessed and honored to have in our employ a vast array of people who are dedicated to social justice and passionate about our Mission.
One of these people is Librada Paz, our Western New York Office Interim-Coordinator. Librada jumped in when we needed her and has done an amazing job of keeping farmworker justice issues in the spotlight.
Librada will be leaving our employ but will continue to serve on our Board of Directors.
It is with both sadness and good wishes that we say  ''Thank you y Dios te cuide in everything you do.'
As a result of Librada's departure we are seeking a new
Coordinator. Please see below.
