Mission

Rural and Migrant Ministry works for the creation of a just rural New York State through:

· Nurturing leadership
· Standing with the disenfranchised, especially, farmworkers and rural workers
· Changing unjust systems and structures

Words Of Wisdom

Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of fearful heart, "Be strong, fear not! . . . . (Isaiah 35)

News/Analysis

Once again, RMM was blessed to host the second annual Rural Women's Conference. The gathering brought together women from all across New York and was filled with great energy, lots of hope and a wonderful sense of community.  There were many opportunities to share testimonies and  fellowship. There was also an important array of workshops on such critical issues as: domestic violence, women's health, spiritual strength, and living/working in the midst of diversity One special highlight was the increased number of young women who attended.  The conference was held on November 30th through December1st in Binghampton, NY. The keynote speakers for the conference were Alina Diaz, Judge Josephine Finn and Cynthia Ellis.  Special thanks goes out to the Presbyterian and Episcopal Church Women who helped support the Conference as well as the Sister Fund.

On December 1st, Jordan Wells, Coordinator for the Justice For Farmworkers Campaign, spoke as a panelist on behalf of the Campaign at the"Good Food Now!" conference hosted by Just Food in New York City. The conference served as a forum for highlighting the interconnectedness of equality and dignity for farmworkers and a truly sustainable, just food system. As a result of our participation, we have begun cultivating new relationships with natural allies-farmers, consumers, and folks from other parts of the sustainable foods movement who share our commitment to changing unjust systems and structures.

The Justice For Farmworkers Campaign Update
As the year winds down, our campaign for full equality for farmworkers is heating up. In addition to having a terrific strategy, the JFW campaign's victories will follow from grassroots involvement and activism.  Taking action in our own communities and legislative districts is how we will overcome structural injustice.  With active faith, next year promises to be a historic one for the Justice for Farmworkers campaign-so stay tuned!

RMM Releases: A Preliminary Report Concerning the Potential Detrimental Effects of Local Enforcement of Federal Law. Based on the Testimonies of Migrant Farmworkers and their Advocates, including members of non-profit and religious organizations. This report's focus is an attempt to find commonality between the enforcement of local law and the protection and safety of the entire community.  It is our hope that it can help provide a framework for a pilot project to serve as model for local law enforcement surrounding and within migrant and immigrant farmworker communities.  If you would like more information or you have any questions please contact Luis Torres at ltorres@ruralmigrantministry.org or (585) 537-8360.
