Greetings!

OH WHAT A SUMMER!

For this special edition of RMM NOTES we bring you clips from the "official  newspaper" of the Summer Camp, where our theme was "Courage". There are three age groups at Overnight Camp: Hope (the youngest), Justice, and the oldest group - Empowerment.  We are grateful to Camp Kutz in Warwick NY, for providing us space for our overnight camp.

The articles were written by campers!  We hope you enjoy them, and we thank you for your support.  If you haven't had a chance to support the summer youth program, its still not to late, as we still owe quite a bit for the camp.  We had close to one hundred children at the overnight camp, and had to turn away over thirty others.

CONEY ISLAND FIELD TRIP A SUCCESS!!

Itzel Fernandez, Coney Island, New York.

Anxious, ready, and hopeful for no rain were all the kids at Kutz Camp.  The annual camp trip was on Thursday, August 18, 2007 and Ruth as well as Sheina Faircloth, the camp directors, were just as eager as all the campers.  Waking up early in the morning is a daily routine for everyone at the camp, but getting ready for the BIG day can become quite a hassle when you're thinking about the amazing day at the beach.  Last year, The Summer Leadership Camp, which is organized by the Rural Migrant Ministry, went to an erratic Yankee baseball game and ESPN  in New York City . This year, they went to Coney Island where we went to Astroland amusement park, explored the beach and enjoyed a wonderful night listening to the legendary Anita Baker.

THE CHOICE TIMES

Michelle Leandro

RMM Camp was and still is one of the best camps. Many parents bring their kids to the camp. Many kids meet other kids from other places and make new friends. It lasts one week from Sunday to Saturday. We have a lot of things we do at camp. We have Choice Time every day except Wednesday and Thursday.

Choice Time is fun because there are many things to do. For example, the camp has fishing, swimming, "Pica-Paper" Flowers, dancing, drumming, beat making, recording music, soccer, bear hunt, "Games Galore," "Tag Extravaganza," "Funky Espanol," Broom Hockey, and,  the most important-without it we wouldn't have this newspaper-the "RMM Newspaper Club."

I went to some kids to ask them what they liked and disliked about the Choice Times. Some kids were from Justice, Hope and Empowerment (the three age groups in the RMM Camp). I also got opinions from a couple counselors. Many kids were disappointed with the bear hunt because they didn't see a bear! What happens to the bears, I ask?

I asked many kids and they said that they loved swimming and getting wet. As you can see there are many opinions. So far the camp has been fun and will always be fun!

ANIMALS ON STAGE!!

A Review of the Talent Show

Matt Dolamore

The hottest show on stage last in Warwick , New York went up on Friday August 18th, at the RMM overnight camp held at Camp Kutz . Ranging from theater to dance, music to spoken word, art to comedy, the campers at the 2007 RMM Summer Camp wowed the audience with their amazing skills. Quickly thereafter, whispers were heard claiming that the show was in the best form it had been in for years!

Brenda Asevedo was a superb MC, and her Justice Girls group represented their group in a big way. The Hope Counselors, (taking advantage of their kids' early bedtimes) prepared a dark yet touching skit reminding us that some people and memories will never leave us.

COURAGE CANCIONES

Working with the 2007 camp theme of Courage, the Hope children (8-11 year-olds) wrote these songs guided by Joe Crookston, composer, performance artist, and producer, who is one of our visiting professional artists. The tune of Courage was created by camper, Dustin.

COURAGE

Chorus              We have all the courage

We can join together

We can just keep trying

If we believe in ourselves.

I went cliff jumping, Scared me half to death

But I did it, And I'm proud of myself.

I went flying, on a high trapeze

24 feet high, I'm proud of myself

Ramaia is my sister, I'm her bigger brother

I'm responsible, I'm proud of myself.

I went off to camp, I didn't know nobody

I tried some new things, I'm proud of myself.

SWIM, FISH, RUN, WALK

I went swimming, Down at the swimming pool

I jumped into the water, And I went from hot to cool

Swim on (repeats)

I went fishing, Down at the water hole,

I caught me a catfish, With my big ole' fishing pole

Fish on (repeats)

I went on a bear hunt, Deep in the woods,

And when I saw that bear, I ran as fast as I could.

Run on (repeats)

WE REPRESENT THE WORLD

Chorus              We are from Mexico , Tokyo , Nicaragua , Ecuador

                        We represent the world

We are from Canada , El Salvador , Hawaii , and Israel

                        We represent the world.

Yo estoy vivo, y tenemos valor en nuestro corazón.

I am alive and I have courage in my heart.

I have courage in my heart.

WHY?!

A Poem by Various Empowerment Men and Women

Why do we need courage to love? Why are we not equal? Why do chemicals exist? Why are normal people murdered but important people assassinated? Why are my eyes open but I still don't believe this? Why do other people think they have the right to tell me how to be me? Why is there a 50$ bottle of water?

Why do we dream?

Why do we exist? Why do we pray? Why are we blinded by what we want to see?

Why can't you tag time and freeze it? Why do people want things they can't have?

Why to the people closest to you hurt you the most?

Why is there hatred is this world?

Why?

Why!

NURSES SCHOLARSHIP FUND WINNER ANNOUNCED AT CAMP!

A loyal group of four nurses have faithfully attended RMM Overnight Camp as volunteers for many years.  We give thanks to Lynda Spring, Suzie Collins, Courtney Collins and Peggy Andreas for their commitment and compassion.  Two years ago the Nurses decided to go even further in their care. Recognizing the talent, ambition and desire to succeed in the campers, the nurses decided to create a new scholarship that would support participants in the youth empowerment program who were interested in a career in health.

This year the RMM Camp Nurses Scholarship has been awarded to PRsico Acevedo who just completed his junior year at Bard College as a pre-med student.  Prisco is long-time camper, counselor and former member of the Youth Arts Group. He exemplifies leadership, hard work and determination.  He is also passionate about giving back to the community.

For more information about the Fund, and how you can support it - please contact the office.
