My Life as a Dog Challenge!

Eight contestants to live chained to doghouses in Bricktown; Last person to withstand the elements wins a free CNG vehicle donated by Chesapeake Energy Corp.

The "My Life as a Dog Challenge" contest is coming soon!  Eight contestants will be chained to doghouses in Bricktown September 12 - 19 in an effort to raise awareness of the cruel practice of chaining dogs. The individual who stays in the competition the longest or wins the people's choice award in the event of a tie, will win a free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle donated by Chesapeake Energy Corp.

The Humane Society will be accepting applications July 27 - Aug. 21 for those interested in competing in the challenge. Contestants can apply online at www.KJ103fm.com using the keyword "dog". Morning show hosts TJ and Janet will be interviewing the applicants on air and selecting the final eight contestants. The contestants will be chained to eco-friendly doghouses designed by TAP Architecture and built by donated supplies from Flintco Construction for the duration of the contest.

To simulate the lack of socialization chained dogs receive, the contestants will not be allowed to talk to one another, family or friends during the competition. Contestants will be required to complete two blog entries per day which will be uploaded to the My Life as a Dog Challenge Web site, www.mylifeasadogchallenge.org. The contestants will not be allowed to have any personal belongings with the exception of prescribed medication and will use a portable toilet.

"We are so excited about this event and all the community partners who have stepped up to join us in this effort," said Christy Counts, president of the Central Oklahoma Humane Society. "Chaining is not only inhumane, but it's also a public safety issue that must be resolved."

Research indicates dogs chained for long periods have a tendency to become highly aggressive. Several attacks on people by chained dogs have been documented. For example, a study published in the Sept. 15, 2000, issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association reported that 17 percent of dogs involved in fatal attacks on humans between 1979 and 1998 were restrained on their owners' properties at the time of the attack.

According to the U.S. Humane Society, more than 100 communities in more than 30 states have passed laws that regulate the practice of chaining animals. Maumelle, Ark. and Tucson, Ariz. have completely banned the chaining of unattended dogs. Several other communities have restricted the amount of time or outlined certain conditions for chaining. For example, Orange County, Fla., does not allow tethering between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. or during times of extreme weather.

Sponsors of the My Life as a Dog Challenge include: Chesapeake Energy Corp., TAP Architecture, Jordan Associates, KJ103FM Radio, Oklahoma Gazette, the Oklahoma Media Group and Flintco Construction.

Great Article! OK Humane welcomes our new Adoption Center Manager!

CaraHello everyone!  My name is Cara Russell and I am ecstatic to be the new Adoption Center Manager.  Oklahoma City is a special place to me as I was born and raised here.  After graduating from The University of Oklahoma I moved back to Oklahoma City to pursue my dream of working in animal welfare.

I have always known that helping animals was my purpose since I was a little girl.  When I was six months old my parents got me a beautiful Cocker Spaniel named Lady, and she never left my side.  She lived to be 18 and she made me the lover of animals that I am today.

I now have 4 babies; a wild and crazy five year old German Shepherd/Husky mix named Jackson, a Cocker Spaniel named Tobi, and two precious cats named Vada and Vern.  I have only one sister who just turned 14, so I spend most of my free time with my family.  I love being outdoors doing anything from riding my bike around town to hiking in The Wichita Mountains.  I also love winding down with some yoga or knitting.  I started making and selling my scarves and neck wraps through my website, www.caradawn.com.

I have a great passion to help animals through educating the public about animal welfare, and I can't wait to get more involved.  I am so excited to meet everyone, so if you have some time, stop by the Adoption Center to say hello!
"Kitty Cat Countdown"
Cat Adoption Event!

OK Humane is excited to announce the "Kitty Cat Countdown" cat adoption event! The event will be held starting on August 25th and running through August 30th.  In an effort to adopt out 75 cats during the five day period, OK Humane is offering cat adoption fees of only $25.00. Normal adoption fees are $70.00. The adoption fee includes the following procedures: spay/neuter, de-worming, vaccinations, flea/tick treatment, microchip and snap test.  In addition to the adoption discount, all kitty retail at the OK Humane Adoption Center will be 10% off.

"On the tail end of kitten season, we are overflowing with cats and kittens. We think $25.00 is a great deal and will hopefully inspire families to come adopt!" says OK Humane Director Christy Counts.

On Saturday the 29th the OK Humane Teen Leadership board will be hosting children's activities and story times as part of our Humane Education initiative.

Potential adopters can take advantage of the special in three different locations, the OK Humane Adoption Center, Edmond PetSmart and the PetSmart at North May and 63rd. The OK Humane Adoption Center is located at 7500 North Western Avenue and will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 7pm and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm. The participating PetSmart locations will be offering the OK Humane special one day only on Saturday August 29th from 11am to 4pm.

        Volunteers Needed!
            Chain-Off

OK Humane is looking for Volunteers to assist with one of our biggest events to date! The My Life As Dog Challenge will take place September 12th through the 19th in Bricktown, and Volunteers for all hours of the day and night are needed to help us educate the public about the cruelties of dog chaining. All you'll have to do is make sure no one breaks the rules, type up contestant journal entries, help with meal times, and participate in event activities. This will be a fun, exciting way to call attention to one of the worst animal cruelty practices that takes place every day here in Oklahoma. You definitely don't want to miss out!

We need LOTS of Volunteers to make this event a reality, so call Amy Shrodes at (405) 286-1229 or email amy@okhumane.org to sign up now!

Become an OK Humane Foster Home!

Tongue
The Central Oklahoma Humane Society relies on foster homes to house and provide temporary care for the dogs and cats in our adoption program. A foster home/foster parent is an individual, couple or family who provides temporary care, shelter and love for OK Humane animal(s) while it is waiting to be adopted. Foster homes are an absolute vital part of saving the lives of animals in Oklahoma City; the more foster homes we have, the more animals we can save: it's as simple as that!

Our success hinges on our Foster homes, and we need your help!  Fostering is a critical part of Oklahoma City achieving no-kill status by 2012.

Volunteer Spotlight On...Lindsay Laird!

I became involved with the Central Oklahoma Humane Oklahoma Humane SocietySociety in November 2008 when a co-worker was looking to adopt a cat. I had heard about the Adoption Center and so I told her she should check it out. One day during lunch, we went up there and I was floored. It was such a clean, friendly and unique place, I was immediately hooked and knew I wanted to be a part of it. I spent some time loving on the dogs and asked one of the employees if I could come up during my lunch to play with the animals. She told me I would first need to become a volunteer. That's where my story began.

I went through volunteer training and learned of all the different opportunities to volunteer. For the first couple months I helped out doing outreaches at PetSmart. It was here that I spoke with some foster parents and learned more about fostering dogs. I toyed around with the idea, talked it over with my husband and fostered my first dog, Tallulah (a St. Bernard puppy) in January.

Since then, I have fostered four other dogs and serve a co-captain at PetSmart outreaches. Most recently, I have had the privilege of working on the "My Life as a Dog Challenge" committee helping out with public relations. I've had a blast sharing the story of the Humane Society and the purpose of the Challenge with local media.

"I wanted to provide you an update on Lola (We've now changed her name to Isabella (Izzy). She is much fun in our big back yard, she has lots of space to run and explore in. She has a smile on her face every day. We are also making progress in integrating her in with her doggie sisters.

We had a great experience through the Oklahoma Humane Society and will pass the word."

India

"I adopted India, now named Eva, during the January 2009 ice storm.  I brought her home, and she hid under my bed for several days, only coming out to eat.  I was so worried it wasn't going to work out, or that she didn't like her new home.  Then one night after I'd fallen asleep, I felt this little purring fur ball - the loudest purring I'd ever heard - come curl up on shoulder.  Seven months later, that's Eva's "spot," every single night.  She's the happiest little cat I've ever met, and I'm not entirely sure how I ever lived without her.  She loves to play - she even plays fetch!! - and loves to hide things from me, like make-up brushes, jewelry, and even my reading glasses!  She always knows when I'm sick or when I'm upset, because she comes and sits in my lap or rubs on my face - purring all the while.  She's a mess but I love her; adopting Eva from the Humane Society is one of the greatest decisions I've ever made."

We appreciate the incredible energy and dedication of all our volunteers, trappers and foster parents.  This organization could not accomplish anything without your talents and hard work.  Thank you for all you do.  There is so much on the horizon with OK Humane, and with your help we will be able to accomplish great things for animals in Oklahoma City. Together, we can do it!

Sincerely,

Central Oklahoma Humane Society
