Oklahoma Humane Society

 New Spay/Neuter Clinic Now Open!

The Central Oklahoma Humane Society is very proud to announce the opening of our high-volume spay/neuter clinic at 4522 NW 16th Street in the Meridian Plaza shopping center. OK Humane Place Spay/Neuter Clinic opened it's doors on June 8th, 2009.

Here is a note from our Clinic Manager about their first week:

"The new OK Humane Place Spay & Neuter Clinic has had a wonderful first week!  We have successfully spayed/neutered 76 animals and plan to ramp those numbers up very fast.  Our medical staff is doing a fantastic job caring for our precious little patients.

One of the Clinic Staff's favorite patients of the week was a 10 year old pit who in her lifetime has had approximately 12 litters of puppies.  She was in pretty poor condition, but her owner has never been able to afford vet care for her until now.  Her mother was very appreciative of us taking such great care of her precious baby."

Clinic Hours:
8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday - Friday

Great Article!Humane Alliance Training Program.

Oklahoma Humane SocietyThe mission at Humane Alliance in Asheville, NC is to provide targeted, high-volume, high-quality, low-cost sterilization services as the non-lethal solution to the companion pet overpopulation dilemma.

To address the problem of pet overpopulation Humane Alliance has established the National Spay/Neuter Response Team.  According to the Humane Alliance website (http://www.humanealliance.org), "the NSNRT is a strategic training program designed by Humane Alliance Spay/Neuter clinic to address a national epidemic. The vision is the strategic placement of this spay/neuter model across the nation."

A few weeks ago, staff from the OK Humane Place spay/neuter clinic attended a week long, intensive training program put on by the Humane Alliance in Asheville, NC to become the most recent NSNRT Clinic to open.  The staff were directed and trained by Karla Brestle, DVM, who is one of the leading spay/neuter veterinarians in the country. The Humane Alliance team will also be at the new clinic in Oklahoma City for the first two weeks after opening for additional training.

Quita Mazzina the Director of Humane Alliance adds, "The Central Oklahoma Humane Society has contributed so much to animal welfare in Oklahoma City and the surrounding areas. The organization's efforts and achievements are recognized by leaders across the country. Humane Alliance's National Spay/Neuter Response Team is honored to partner with them in opening this high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter clinic. Clearly, the best way to reduce the number of companion animals entering our shelters is through prevention."

Great Article! Knights in Service

Oklahoma Humane SocietyFor the fourth year, Christ the King Catholic Church hosts their "Knights in Service" weeklong junior high program this week, June 15th through the 19th.  This service-oriented program will provide 70+ fifth through eight graders an opportunity to put their stewardship in action through various community based service projects in the Oklahoma City area.

Students are divided into four "houses" named after saints, St. Julius, St. Clare, St. James of Padua and St. Teresa.  After hearing a speaker each morning, each house heads out to take part in a hands-on service project at one of four locations.  This summer, participants will visit The Central Oklahoma Humane Society, Holy Angels Church, Special CARE, Inc. and Epworth Villa. After lunch each day back at church, the Knights in Service participants take part in afternoon activities like swimming and field day games.  At the end of the week, they are treated to day of fun at Frontier City.

Tommy Cordova, Director of Religious Education at Christ the King says, "The goal of Knights in Service is for the kids to give of their time and talents and understand that service to others is an essential component of our faith.  And by developing this early with fun and interactive projects, we hope they continue to see stewardship as an important part of their own personal life going forward."

During their visit to the OK Humane Adoption Center, The kids will be learning about humane treatment of animals and the importance of choosing to adopt pets and spay/neuter.  They will also be making dog and cat toys, that will be given out to Foster homes in the program.
Great Article! Companies Giving Back in OKC

OK Humane is always thankful for support from outstanding companies in the community.  We would like to take the time to thank a couple of companies that have shown support of OK Humane recently.

  • Love's Travel Stops and Country Stores
In honor of its 45th anniversary, Love's gave nearly 400 employees $450 each to donate to a charity of their choice in the greater Oklahoma City area.  A portion of these employees chose the Central Oklahoma Humane Society as their charity of choice.  A huge thanks to Love's and the team members for their $4,500 donation!

  • Chesapeake Energy Corporation

In commemoration of their 20th anniversary, Chesapeake employees are donating 20,000 hours of Volunteer work and community service by June 27th across Oklahoma and 16 other states where the company has operations. Some of the Chesapeake employees have chosen OK Humane to donate their Volunteer hours to, and are helping us out with a number of different projects.  Thanks Chesapeake!

Volunteer Spotlight On...Ethan Hong!

This month we would like to focus on an amazing Volunteer who is taking part in his company, CarMax's Matching program for volunteer hours.  CarMax has currently donated $5,000 dollars through this program to OK Humane and will Oklahoma Humane Societycontinue to match all employees volunteer hours with donations to the 501-c3 non-profit they are volunteering for.  Thanks Ethan!!

· How long have you been volunteering with the Central Oklahoma Humane Society?

I have been volunteering with the Central Oklahoma Humane Society since September of 2008.

· What prompted you to choose the Humane Society for your efforts?

I kind of just fell into it.  I had a friend who had been volunteering with the Humane Society since its inception.  She got me involved originally.  Since then, it's been kind of a non-stop thrill ride.

· Do you volunteer with any other organizations? If so, which?

I wish I could say that I did.  However, my volunteer time with the Humane Society is like another full-time job when I leave CarMax.  I am either at the Adoption Center, an adoption Outreach event, transporting animals to and from the Spay/Neuter Clinic, or somewhere in-between.

· How has the Matching Hours program helped your chosen organization?

The Matching Hours program goes directly to the part of the organization in which I am involved.  The Adoption Program benefits the Central Oklahoma Humane Society with veterinary costs, supplies for the Adoption Center, medical treatment of treatable animals, and so much more!

· What do you think of the Matching Hours program?

I think it's fantastic!!!  The hours accumulate so fast when volunteering and it's a great way to give more than just your time and energy.

· Please share a memorable volunteer moment from the last year...

I was fostering a litter of 9 puppies a few months ago.  It was the first time I had taken a large litter.  Spending time with them at home and then bringing them to our Adoption Center daily during my time off, I saw a tremendous amount of growth.  I spend several hours at the Adoption Center each time and was able to watch them all get adopted over the course of 3 days.  It was great to meet the new families of my little ones.

· When did you first use the Matching Hours program? What do you think of the process of getting your hours matched?

I first used the Matching Hours program this past December.  After counting up the hours for 2008, I realized it didn't take that long to accumulate the 500 maximum .  I spoke with the Central Oklahoma Humane Society President about CarMax Cares and she was thrilled.

We submitted the hours online and I was able to track the payment status as it was updated.  It was very easy to use.

· Please share any other thoughts or insight about volunteering and the Matching Hours program that comes to mind.

I would have to say that if someone has the time and passion to put into volunteering with any non-profit, it will help them grow as an individual tremendously.  I don't have any kids of my own, but for me, to be responsible for a life, is mind-opening.  I spend so much of my non-work time with my foster puppies and at the Adoption Center, it only makes sense to use the Matching Hours program to its fullest extent.

· Do you have any other hobbies or interests you'd like to share?

I wish I had time for other hobbies! I have two dogs, Echo, a Border Collie/Blue Heeler Mix who is 1-year old and Edia (pronounced Asia), a 5 month old White German Shepherd/Terrier mix. There's a lot of crate-training, house-training, and socialization that I spend more hours than I could count doing.  It's definitely pressing at times, but when they get adopted it's all worth it.

Great Article!"Happy Tails!"

We LOVE to see pictures and hear stories of our adopted animals in their new homes!  If you have one to share with us, please send it to
news@okhumane.org.

Chase

"Chase (Baron) likes to wake up Daddy to go play! He is SO big! There's more of him to hug. He still loves playing with our other collie Sampson and our 2 shelties. His favorite toy is stuffed duck. Thank you for our boy!"

Rick, Gwen & Tasha
We appreciate the incredible energy and dedication of all our volunteers, trappers and foster parents.  This organization could not accomplish anything without your talents and hard work.  Thank you for all you do.  There is so much on the horizon with OK Humane, and with your help we will be able to accomplish great things for animals in Oklahoma City. Together, we can do it!

Sincerely,

Central Oklahoma Humane Society
