ASPCA Invests in OKC Effort
by Brian Brus The Journal Record April 14, 2009
OKLAHOMA CITY - The city animal welfare department's efforts to decrease animal deaths and improve pet placements has yielded a $1 million investment in Oklahoma City by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, officials said.
"This initiative is going to save a lot of lives, and, of course, the costs that are associated by keeping the unwanted animal population down. And improving the reclaim rate is an economic benefit to the city to get animals out sooner," animal welfare superintendent Catherine English said. "It's like bringing home a national championship in our industry."
English's department, in association with the Oklahoma Humane Society, started working toward the ASPCA partnership more than a year ago in direct competition with six other cities as part of the organization's national Mission Orange promotion. That list was pared to Oklahoma City; Cleveland, Ohio; and Ashville, N.C., in January 2008. The groups announced the final winner this week.
As the competition tightened, both city agencies dramatically improved a wide range of elements in Oklahoma City's animal welfare system, including shelter operations, policy updates and adoption promotions, English said.
For example, the agencies now use the ASPCA's Meet Your Match family of adoption programs, which involve research-backed animal behavior assessments that have proven to increase placement rates and reduce return rates. Adoptions through the city agencies in 2008 increased by nearly 3,000 cats and dogs compared with 2007, and by 400 in January and February this year compared with the same two months in 2008.
English said the agencies have developed more transparent and productive relationships among government officials, public leaders and city residents, resulting in positive changes such as increases in volunteers, foster families and daily visitors to the facilities. In March alone, more than 9,400 people visited the city's animal shelter, she said.
Identification as an ASPCA Mission Orange partner community means a sharp increase in money, staffing and other resources from the nonprofit association. The ASPCA will invest up to $1 million in funding and resources in Oklahoma City, officials said - $600,000 in funds over three years, and the balance in the value of related management, consulting and training services. Other partner communities include Austin, Texas; Gulfport-Biloxi, Miss.; Philadelphia; Spokane, Wash.; Tampa, Fla.; and Charleston, N.C.
"We are working together to set a specific three-year target for Oklahoma City's LRR (live release rate), a target that will be both aggressive and achievable," said Bert Troughton, senior director of community outreach for the ASPCA. "We have seen that these two organizations and this community mean business when it comes to saving lives. Their enthusiasm, determination and follow-through make them a perfect candidate to advance lifesaving best practices for the rest of the animal protection field."
Local Humane Society President Christy Counts said the partnership status affirms the efforts of the larger community.
"It's particularly gratifying that now we're bringing in national resources to help solve this problem," Counts said. "It ties in very nicely with economic development. ... We've got all these cool things going on in the city. We just need to get the word out. So this is one more feather in our caps."
English said, "Our community demands a high quality of life, and having a high standard of animal welfare is critical to that issue." |

We have a really neat fundraising event coming up on
Saturday, May 30th. Books-a-Million on the corner of Penn and Memorial Avenue in Oklahoma City, will be hosting a book fair fundraiser for us! The way it works is that from 11 AM to 3 PM on Saturday, May 30th they will donate 20% of their net sales from one designated register.
We did this with them in April, and it was a big success! We are excited about this new partnership with Books-a-Million, and we hope to see you all at the store on May 30th!
If you have any questions about the event, e-mail our Volunteer Coordinator at amy@okhumane.org. |

Collar Drive was a Huge Success!
|
In April, our adoption team hosted a collar drive to help outfit our adoption animals with a collar and identification tags. Statistics show that only 5% of dogs not wearing a collar/tags that enter a shelter get reunited with their owners. That statistics goes down to 2% for cats. Here at OK Humane, we feel it to be imperative to help our animals be reunited in the event they become lost. So, in April, we decided to ask the public for help in this endeavor. And our community and Volunteers made this a great success. In total, we received over 238 collars and 32 leashes!!!!! This will go a long way in outfitting our animals with collars. Thank you to all who participated and donated to this wonderful cause. A special thank you to our Volunteer, Shelley Dobson. She connected OK Humane with Rose America Corporation, who donated over 50 new collars and leashes. |

Volunteer Spotlight On...Kristin Smith! |

Kristin Smith adopted her first kitten on a trip to Arkansas' Crater of Diamonds State Park. She and her husband, Chris, didn't discover any diamonds, but they did spot a kitten wandering down the highway on their way home. The little hitchhiker was only four weeks old, had a crooked tail, and became the newest member of the family. After settling into his new home, the kitten became friends with a pregnant feral cat he watched through the window. Unfortunately, the feral cat did not have a safe home, but Kristin and her husband soon bought a new house. The mother cat had her kittens the same day as the closing, and the whole family moved to the new house. The feral cat was spayed and returned outside, while her kittens became inside cats. Kristin is thankful that OK Humane supports the TNR program in our community, and she has worked with the program to trap feral cats. She also helps out at the Adoption Center one afternoon a week, has done some Fostering, assists with special events as often as she can, and enjoys being on the Follow-Up Team so she can hear all the happy endings. Her current animal family includes an elderly rabbit, Jack, five cats, Harvey, Pete, Lucy, Maggie, and Olivia, a turtle, Old Man, and the fish, Boomer and Sooner. When she's not spending time with the animals, Kristin enjoys working in her garden, promoting family literacy, and assisting her husband with his real estate business. |

"Happy Tails!" |
We LOVE to see pictures and hear stories of our adopted animals in their new homes! If you have one to share with us, please send it to news@okhumane.org.
"Christy, You asked me to send you photos of Abby Lee. The first one is the day we got her. Kinda skinny and pitiful. The rest I took last night as she played with her friend Chui Li. She has really made a quick adjustment. The last picture was taken when I was napping on my chair and everyone had decided they needed naps too. What a brood!
She sleeps with me in a little bed right by my head. We have become best buds. Thank you for being there for the animals that need you."

We appreciate the incredible energy and dedication of all our volunteers, trappers and foster parents. This organization could not accomplish anything without your talents and hard work. Thank you for all you do. There is so much on the horizon with OK Humane, and with your help we will be able to accomplish great things for animals in Oklahoma City. Together, we can do it!
Sincerely,
Central Oklahoma Humane Society |
