HB 1332 (Pet Quality Assurance Act) Passes out of Senate Committee--Now Call Your Senator!
|
We are happy and proud to announce that HB 1332 passed out of the full House of Representatives and moved on to the Senate Appropriations Committee, where it passed on April 1. Now it will move to the full Senate for a vote. This is one of the last hurdles for passage of this bill. OK Humane supports this bill that would regulate and require licenses for breeders and commercial "puppy mills" in Oklahoma.
We thank all of you who took the time to tell your representative your thoughts on this bill; when we sent out a call to action, we knew you would stand up and answer! Now we need your help again.
UPDATE: Please contact your Senator today and let him or her know your thoughts on this bill. Find your senator and contact information on this web site.

Help Us Put a Collar on Every Dog and Cat!
|
Beginning April 1, the adoption center will be hosting a month long collar drive for our animals in our adoption program. We are asking everyone to please bring us new or slightly worn collars. They can be any size and for both dogs and cats. Did you know that only 5% of dogs that end up in shelters without collars/tags get reunited with their owners?? And that is 2% for cats??? We really want this to be a success and as usual, we need your help!! Please let your family, friends and co-workers know and to pass the word. You can drop off collars at the adoption center, 7500 N. Western on Tuesday - Saturday from 11:00 - 7:00 and Sundays from 12:00 - 5:00. If you do not have a collar but would like to make a donation, there will be a jar at the front desk just for that purpose. Thank you in advance for helping us make this a reality. We'll let you know how it goes!

Get Ready For Racing Weiners, All to Benefit OK Humane!
|
We have some very exciting news! The Oklahoma Gazette has chosen us to be the beneficiary of the 5th annual Dachshund Dash!
Oklahoma Gazette's Dachshund Dash is a just-for-fun dog racing event that raises money for animal welfare and adoption centers in the metro. This year, the goal is to raise at least $8,000 for Central Oklahoma Humane Society.
The past four years' events have been phenomenally successful, bringing in thousands of onlookers from all across the state and region and raising thousands of dollars for charity. Admission is $1.00, and kids 12 and under are free. Premium seating will be available for $2.00 per person. Spectators may place $2 wagers on the Dachshunds that are racing. If they choose a first or second place dog, they win prizes like t-shirts and bandanas. The proceeds of the wagers are donated to the event beneficiary. For any additional info be sure to check out www.doxiedash.com. The races will be held on May 9th from 1 PM - 5 PM at the downtown Cox Convention Center Arena. This is the first year they will be holding it in such a large venue, so we are hoping for a even better turn out than ever! We will be needing approximately 30-40 Volunteers for the event to help the Gazette staff out from around 12 PM to a little after 5 PM. If you are interested in helping, please contact amy@okhumane.org. Be sure to tell everyone you know to come and support us on May 9th! |

Volunteer Spotlight On...Shelley Dobson!
|
Growing up on a farm outside of Ponca City, OK, I developed my love of animals. I volunteered at the local city animal shelter and took in abandoned animals that were dumped on our farm.
In my adult years, I decided to help with the greyhound adoption effort in Oklahoma City. Being one of the charter members and starting a non profit group from scratch was an excellent learning opportunity and many greyhounds were saved.
I then focused my efforts on the human variety and became a foster parent for Oklahoma County DHS. This led me to the Mayfair Foster Parent Association where I am the treasurer for a great group of dedicated families that take foster children into their home.
I found out about Central Oklahoma Humane Society when I went to the Edmond Petsmart and ran into Lisa as we knew each other through our profession of being Pharmaceutical Representatives. She encouraged me to get involved with fostering and gave me a brochure on the group.
Since that time, I have had over a dozen foster cats and we enjoy taking care of the Edmond Petsmart's Kitty Adoption Center. We feel like each one of those cats are our own and we really appreciate the Petsmart's personnel as they are always asking us if WE need anything! They are a great store and we are very excited when we see an empty cage as we know that we saved a life and another kitty will get a chance of having a new start! |

"Happy Tails!"
|
We LOVE to see pictures and hear stories of our adopted animals in their new homes! If you have one to share with us, please send it to news@okhumane.org.
"We are absolutely in love with Gizmo! We've renamed him Sampson. He & our other cat Nacho & our German Shepherd, Rocky are the best of friends. True to the Siamese nature, Sampson is full of life, mischievous & very affectionate. He gets into everything and makes us laugh on a daily basis. Needless to say he has made himself at home & is a treasured addition to our family." Chris and Brenda A.
"I just wanted to say thank you to the Central Oklahoma Humaine Society. I adopted Tiny in October 2008. He has been the best dog. He loves to sleep with me under the covers and he is very loyal to me. He follows me around everywhere I go. I am so thankful I came to the grand opening and found Tiny. You guys are wonderful and I appreciate your kindness and for you helping all of the animals find great homes. Here is a pic of Tiny!! He is so adorable and loving!" Shawna

We appreciate the incredible energy and dedication of all our volunteers, trappers and foster parents. This organization could not accomplish anything without your talents and hard work. Thank you for all you do. There is so much on the horizon with OK Humane, and with your help we will be able to accomplish great things for animals in Oklahoma City. Together, we can do it!
Sincerely,
Central Oklahoma Humane Society |
