Great Article! HB 1332 (Pet Quality Assurance Act) Passes in the House--Now Call Your Senator!

We are happy and proud to announce that HB 1332 passed out of the full House of Representatives with some amendments.  OK Humane supports this bill that would regulate and require licenses for breeders and commercial "puppy mills" in Oklahoma.

There's a long way to go before this bill becomes a law, and many changes will undoubtedly take place. We thank all of you who took the time to tell your representative your thoughts on this bill; when we sent out a call to action, we knew you would stand up and answer! Now we need your help again.

UPDATE: Please contact your Senator today and let him or her know your thoughts on this bill. Find your senator and contact information on this web site.

Great Article! Dogs Handily Beating Cats in the Penny Wars

During the month of March, the Central Oklahoma Humane Society is holding a fundraiser at the Adoption Center (7500 N Western Ave), most commonly referred to as a 'penny war.'

We're pitting the cats against the dogs!  Each penny is worth a point, but silver coins and paper bills subtract points.  So, if I am rooting for the cats to win, I could drop a $1 bill in the dog donation jar and it will subtract 100 points.

So . . . it's time to dig under the couch cushions, check the backseats of the car and empty out the pickle jar that sits on your dresser.  And encourage everyone else you know to do the same thing!  Most people consider themselves either cat or dog people.

The results will be posted at the beginning of April.  Thank you everyone and let's have some fun!

Great Article! Get Ready For Racing Weiners, All to Benefit OK Humane!

We have some very exciting news!  The Oklahoma Gazette has chosen us to be the beneficiary of the 5th annual Dachshund Dash!

Oklahoma Gazette's Dachshund Dash is a just-for-fun dog racing event that raises money for animal welfare and adoption centers in the metro.  This year, the goal is to raise at least $8,000 for Central Oklahoma Humane Society.

The past four years' events have been phenomenally successful, bringing in thousands of onlookers from all across the state and region and raising thousands of dollars for charity.

Admission is $1.00, and kids 12 and under are free. Premium seating will be available for $2.00 per person. Spectators may place $2 wagers on the Dachshunds that are racing. If they choose a first or second place dog, they win prizes like t-shirts and bandanas. The proceeds of the wagers are donated to the event beneficiary.  For any additional info be sure to check out www.doxiedash.com.

The races will be held on May 9th from 1 PM - 5 PM at the downtown Cox Convention Center Arena.  This is the first year they will be holding it in such a large venue, so we are hoping for a even better turn out than ever!  We will be needing approximately 30-40 Volunteers for the event to help the Gazette staff out from around 12 PM to a little after 5 PM.  If you are interested in helping, please contact amy@okhumane.org.

Be sure to tell everyone you know to come and support us on May 9th!

Volunteer Spotlight On...Nancy Henslee!
Nancy Henslee started volunteering for Christy Counts at the OKC Animal Shelter in May 2006, doing adoption outreaches, walking dogs, decorating for special events, and providing administrative assistance, when necessary.

In 2007, when Christy decided to step out and start the Central Oklahoma Humane Society, Nancy was there to provide whatever assistance she could.  Together with Samantha Burnett, they launched the Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) program in Oklahoma City.  This was the cornerstone project of the Central Oklahoma Humane Society, and Nancy was an integral part of this program's inception, and still is today.  In addition to TNR, Nancy also is an active cat foster for COHS, and volunteers for special events such as the Home & Garden Show and Doggie Derby.

Nancy is a financial analyst for Enogex, LLC, a midstream natural gas pipeline, and in her spare time has volunteered at a veterinary clinic and attended classes for several years in preparation for applying to Veterinary school.  She has been accepted to both Kansas State University and Oklahoma State University Veterinary programs.  Once she decides on which school to attend, she will be starting classes this fall.  Nancy has worked so hard to achieve this dream and we are all SO proud of her and know she'll be an exceptional veterinarian.  We will miss her when she moves!

Nancy lives with her dog, Haley (from the OKC Shelter), and two cats, Nugget, whom she adopted from OK Humane, and Daisy, from the Texas SPCA.  We are so thankful to have Nancy as part of our OK Humane family; she has been a steadfast supporter from the day we started on this journey.  We love you, Nancy!

Great Article!"Happy Tails!"

We LOVE to see pictures and hear stories of our adopted animals in their new homes!  If you have one to share with us, please send it to news@okhumane.org.

"I just wanted to send pictures of my kitten.  I adopted her a couple of months ago.  Her name was Taffy, but she now goes by Aurora. Thank you for all the wonderful work you are doing for the  animals! Because of people like you hundreds of fuzzy babies have a 2nd chance at life. Huge hugs for all of you!"
We appreciate the incredible energy and dedication of all our volunteers, trappers and foster parents.  This organization could not accomplish anything without your talents and hard work.  Thank you for all you do.  There is so much on the horizon with OK Humane, and with your help we will be able to accomplish No-Kill in Oklahoma City. Together, we can do it!

Sincerely,

Central Oklahoma Humane Society
