Some Numbers
As of September 16, 2008, our veterinarians have performed  2,274 surgeries at our spay/neuter clinic!  This clinic is open to any member of the public managing feral cat colonies, as well as rescue groups and shelters.  We also spay and neuter all the cats in the OK Humane TNR program and the dogs and cats in our adoption program.

800 cats and dogs have found homes through our adoption program since 2007!

We have spayed and neutered more than 830 cats as part of our TNR program so far this year.  The great news is that no new kittens are coming out of those colonies we altered last year.  From the kittens trapped as part of TNR, and cats trapped who were tame enough to go into adoption, we have placed 211 into new loving homes!

Great Article! What's Up with OK Humane?
Christy Counts
What an incredible time this is to be a part of animal welfare in Oklahoma City! It is my belief that we are truly close to the "Tipping Point" of a very educated community and an end to euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets.

With the opening of the new adoption center, we believe we will be able to double our adoption program which translates into 2,500 dogs and cats in loving homes.

The OKC Shelter is doing a phenomenal job at placing animals at their location as well! Together we are truly on our way to becoming a No Kill city. On a daily basis now people are coming up to me with encouraging words about our progress.

The community is really starting to step up and do its part as well on our journey. Thank you to each of you that have been a part of our success thus far. Every single person's dollar or action is valuable to us on a daily basis.

We appreciate all of you!

Great Article! Rain Didn't Dampen Spirits at Fall Pet Blessing

OK Humane Pet BlessingDespite the rain from Hurricane Ike reaching Oklahoma City on Saturday, September 13, the OK Humane/Church of the Servant Pet Blessing was a thoroughly successful one!

Hundreds of families showed up with cats, dogs, birds, lizards, rabbits and even a mule in tow to receive blessings from the ministers.  Each pet received a St. Francis charm, prayer card and a goodie bag prepared by members of the congregation.

After a bluegrass invocation from the Wind River band, each pet lined up to receive a personal blessing and prayer with one of the ministers at Church of the Servant.

Click here to see photos from the Pet Blessing!

If your church is interested in joining with OK Humane to have a pet blessing, please contact Christy Counts at christy@okhumane.org or 405-286-1503.

Great Article! OK Humane Welcomes New Volunteer Coordinator/Development Assistant

Hi everyone!  My name is Amy Shrodes and I am the new Volunteer Coordinator/ Development Assistant for the Oklahoma Humane Society!

I have three pets of my own, 2 dogs (a Boxer and a Shih Tzu), and a cat.  Animals have always been my passion and growing up I volunteered at the Idaho Humane Society as much as I could.  I was a Manager at Central Park Dog Daycare & Boarding Center for 2 years, where I first met Christy Counts when the OK Humane Society was getting started.  Watching it progress and grow has been amazing and I am really excited to be a part of it!

I have been working at the Oklahoma Gazette in the advertising department, and also assisting their marketing/ development team.  I have always wanted to be involved with animals long term and  when I heard about this position I immediately applied.  I am very happy to be involved with the OK Humane Society and I have been enjoying meeting all the volunteers and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone I haven't met yet!

I'm diving in headfirst and I have been working closely with Sam and Christy trying to learn as much as possible, as quickly as possible.  Once I learn the ropes I will be the point of contact for volunteers for most of the programs.

If you need to reach me, just email me at amy@okhumane.org.

Great Article! Humane Society Will Miss Dedicated Feral Cat Volunteer

Linda J. Barclay Doyle, a beloved OK Humane volunteer, departed her earthly life in OKC on September 3, 2008 from an auto accident due tragically to the inattentiveness of another driver.

Linda was a vivacious & outgoing lady who never met a stranger, nor left anyone who hadn't felt they had become her friend. She loved cats & polite children, gardening, koi ponds, the adventure of the ''hunt'' for antiques and items of uniqueness. Linda will forever be missed as a Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and the truest friend to a multitude of those lucky enough to have known her.

Linda has been employed throughout her life in a variety of retail, wholesale, & distribution positions, most recently with the May Antique Centre and Greg Earles Estate Sales. To her employers, she was invaluable. She & her John were active Antique Dealers. Linda was a member & past President of the local chapter of the National Assoc. of Watch & Clock Collectors, Northwest Oklahoma City Antique Club, Oklahoma City Antique Guild, Mayflower Society, Oklahoma Humane Society & Assoc. Member of the Okla. Home Builders Association.

Linda is survived by her husband, John Doyle, of whom she recently stated was truly the love of her life. Their children want to express their acknowledgment & gratefulness for his devotion and love for their mother. Linda is also survived by her daughters, Angela Freedman, and Jennifer Smith, granddaughters, Emani Lawrence, and Nevaeh Pertile, sons, Joseph & Mark Doyle, feline companions, Orville, Rambi, Cleo, O'Malley, Zorro, & Rocky, her sister Madelyn Adams, extended family members & a host of friends.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions be sent to: RCB Bank of Nichols Hills, Linda Doyle Feline Rescue Account, 7400 N. Western, OKC, OK 73116.
Great Article! Silver the Frontier Kitty

Silver needs a home!
Silver was rescued from Frontier City when she was just a tiny kitten. She is currently 1 year old and is looking for a family to love.

Silver has a striking, shiny tabby coat. She is quite a friendly girl and loves to sleep in your lap. Silver can also be quite playful and enjoys playing with her toy mouse. Please give Silver a home where she can have the life she deserves...far from the dusty streets of Frontier life!

Volunteer Spotlight on....
Rita Hoch!
Rita HochHello, I am Rita Hoch, Adoption Coordinator for the Oklahoma Humane Society.  I am pictured with the love of my life, William, my 6 year old son. He is the only little child I know that routinely asks his friends if their pets are spayed or neutered!

I am happily married to another William for almost 15 years, he is the most patient and kind man alive. I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the Oklahoma Humane Society. Prior to this, I founded an organization, Pet Assistance League of OK. When I met Christy Counts, we became fast and furious friends and together decided that we would be stronger as one than two separate organizations so I dissolved my group so I could 100% focus on OK Humane. One of the best decisions I have made.

I have always been a huge animal lover and have a few of my own. I have 5 horses, 5 dogs and 3 cats. That doesn't begin to cover the fosters that come and stay and then go, remember I said my husband was the most patient man alive!!

One of my rescue dogs, Fancy, and I obtained our therapy dog certification earlier this year and have certainly enjoyed visiting schools and hospitals. One of the programs we will begin later this year is called "Tail Waggin' Tutors". This program is designed to have children and dogs bond together over a shared story. The child's confidence and reading skills grow in a relaxed environment. They learn to read while having a positive relationship with a dog.

My background is actually in Speech-Pathology. I worked in a hospital setting helping patients who have suffered strokes. After 10 years I began devoting the majority of time to animals and will continue to do so.

If you have someone you'd like to nominate for the Volunteer Spotlight, send a message to news@okhumane.org.

Great Article!"Happy Tails!"

We LOVE to see pictures and hear stories of our adopted animals in their new homes!  If you have one to share with us, please send it to news@okhumane.org.

Chase (formerly Baron) graduates from obedience class at PetSmart!

"Thanks for all your help at Petsmart on Saturday.  Buddy is now known as Rowdy. He's doing great, having fun, and we're already spoiling him while making sure he knows we're the bosses!"
Jim S., Oklahoma City
We appreciate the incredible energy and dedication of all our volunteers, trappers and foster parents.  This organization could not accomplish anything without your talents and hard work.  Thank you for all you do.  There is so much on the horizon with OK Humane, and with your help we will be able to accomplish No-Kill in Oklahoma City. Together, we can do it!

Sincerely,
