As of August 19, 2008, our veterinarians have performed 2,394 surgeries at our spay/neuter clinic! This clinic is open to any member of the public managing feral cat colonies, as well as rescue groups and shelters. We also spay and neuter all the cats in the OK Humane TNR program and the dogs and cats in our adoption program.
We have spayed and neutered more than 1,794 cats as part of our TNR program so far this year. The great news is that no new kittens are coming out of those colonies we altered last year. From the kittens trapped as part of TNR, and cats trapped who were tame enough to go into adoption, we have placed 211 into new loving homes!

Blessings Help Families Include Pets in Spiritual Lives
|
In an effort to help Oklahoma City residents include their pets in their families' spiritual lives, The Central Oklahoma Humane Society (OK Humane) has partnered with area churches to hold a series of free pet blessings.
The fall blessing is scheduled for Saturday, September 13th from 10:00am to 12:00 p.m. at Church of the Servant, located at 14343 N. Macarthur Blvd. in Oklahoma City. The event will take place in the east parking lot.
Pastors will offer individual blessings for each pet that attends the event. Each pet will also receive a blessing certificate as a memento of the event. OK Humane offers the pet blessings as part of Humane Education, a public outreach and education program intended to teach people about the importance of animal welfare. Other elements of the Humane Education include lesson plans in the school system and after-school programs for children of all ages. |

Going Back to School Means Adjustments for Pets, Too
|
Many families are gearing up for changes this month as kids head back to school. Families who adopted a dog or cat during the summer months may forget that their pet will experience a change, too, when kids/babysitters/parents are suddenly gone all day.
If you've been keeping different hours during the summer months, start getting back on a regular schedule. Wake, feed, exercise and potty your pet at the same times each day; pets thrive on a routine (especially rescued animals who may be somewhat insecure). This will also help your kids when it's time to start getting up early to catch the bus!
What if you've been home all day with the kids, and your pet is not used to being alone? Help acclimate him now to the change. Make sure your pet has his "own" place. A crate is great for dogs, and cats love a high perch or snuggly bed. Make sure it's a place where your pet feels safe. If he's particularly insecure, you might give him an old T-shirt that smells like someone in the family he is close to; this can be very comforting when an animal is left alone.
Try leaving for short periods of time to get your pet accustomed to being alone. When you leave, give him a treat, and praise him when you return. If your new school or work schedule means you'll be gone for many hours, try to come home mid-day (especially for dogs who need to be let outside to eliminate) or arrange for someone else to do so.
Some people feel it is cruel to keep a dog or cat in a cage all day long. Certainly this is true, if the crate is too small, there's nothing soft to lie on, no litter box provided (for cats) and no water available. However, if you have an appropriate crate, with water and toys, your pet (especially dogs) will feel very "at home" in the crate. It also keeps your pet safe. In the event of a fire or other emergency, animals have a tendency to hide; if they are in a crate, rescue personnel can easily locate your pet and get it to safety.
Going back to school is a tough transition for everyone--including your pets! Make sure your best friend is ready for the change and you'll be an A+ pet parent. |

Annie is the Perfect Dog!
|
We are happy to report that Missy, last month's pet of the month, has been adopted and now lives with a wonderful family in Mustang, OK!
Annie is a 1-2 year old pointer mix. She is extremely docile, well-behaved and affectionate. She is so so sweet and calm, and just wants to just be near someone. She gets along with other dogs and cats and she doesn't bark. She weighs around 50 lbs. She has been spayed and is current on all her vaccinations. She has tested negative for heartworm and is on a heartworm and flea/tick preventive. Her adoption fee is $100.

Volunteer Spotlight on....Deborah Kaiser!
|
Deborah Kaiser first recognized that she had a "passion" for helping animals in the mid 1990s when she volunteered at Pets and People walking the dogs and cleaning their cages and brushing their coats. She went on to volunteer with Sooner Golden Retriever Rescue for several years and took great joy in placing many Goldens in forever homes. (including a few in her own home). Later she was a volunteer with VAW, and then with PAL (both of which also helped expand her own pack).
Now as a volunteer with OK Humane, Deborah is always willing to take "just one more" special need animal into her home and give it the care it needs. Deborah also loves to work at the Spay and Neuter Clinic helping with the surgery or taking care of the patients after.
At the recent Doggy Derby at Remington Park, she took on a somewhat different role as she spent what was already a hot day, in the dog costume dancing and waving and greeting all the attendees.
Deborah has a genuine love for all animals and enjoys being able to give them as much love and attention as possible.
If you have someone you'd like to nominate for the Volunteer Spotlight, send a message to news@okhumane.org. |

"Happy Tails!"
|
We LOVE to see pictures and hear stories of our adopted animals in their new homes! If you have one to share with us, please send it to news@okhumane.org.
"Tucker and Francis were adopted five months apart, but both from OK Humane and they love each other! They're together constantly, love to romp, play and sleep together. What great guys!" Samantha, Oklahoma City "I wanted you to know that
we love Shelby very much--so much that she sleeps with me at night. So
yes, that does mean that I have black hair all over my white bed, but I
can live with it!" Danah J., Oklahoma City
Tina's new name is "Ginger" and she lives with her new mom, dad, brother and sister in Ada, Oklahoma! They drove back to OKC for our free obedience classes for all adopters, and we are happy to report she is loving life with her new family! Her mom sent these pics.
"Molly Mae is doing so great! She has to be one of the smartest dogs I have ever seen! She is such a joy and is so goofy and silly! Thanks again for everything!" Kaesy B., Lawton
"This is Roxy; we adopted her in Oklahoma in April of 07. We are living in Florida now and she is doing great!! We are so thankful to have her!" Whitney, Palm Harbor, FL |

We appreciate the incredible energy and dedication of all our volunteers, trappers and foster parents. This organization could not accomplish anything without your talents and hard work. Thank you for all you do. There is so much on the horizon with OK Humane, and with your help we will be able to accomplish No-Kill in Oklahoma City. Together, we can do it!
Sincerely,
Central Oklahoma Humane Society |
