Unique opportunity to help homeless pets for those who can't adopt
|
"I wish I could help them all."
"I'd take them all home, if I could."
Do you feel that way as you browse the pet listings on okhumane.org? You're not alone. It's the most common sentiment expressed by the people who email us. The good news is that most of them go on to find the pet of their dreams--that perfect companion--and to provide him or her a "forever home."
But what about the pets still waiting--those equally deserving companions who for some reason just weren't a good lifestyle match?
We've got good news for them, and you can help. Central Oklahoma Humane Society and the Petfinder.com Foundation are excited to offer a feature that allows you to sponsor a homeless pet that has touched your heart, but for some reason you can't adopt at this time. READ MORE |

OK Humane Staff Travel to Richmond, VA to Train/Compete for ASPCA Mission: Orange Program
|
Central Oklahoma Humane Society Staff and board members and OKC Animal Welfare Division (AWD) representatives traveled in July to the Richmond, VA SPCA for training in the ASPCA's Join ASPCA Mission: Orange (JAMO) program.
Future ASPCA Mission: Orange Target Communities will be selected from successful participants in this program, so in addition to training, our humane society was competing against other communities hoping to be chosen for the program.
JAMO communities, which are selected annually through a competitive application process, participate in one year of intensive work with ASPCA experts. Together, the communities and the ASPCA focus on collecting, analyzing and working with data to identify and implement the specific programs and practices that will increase live release rates in each of the selected communities.
A generous grant from the ASPCA JAMO program provided funding for OK Humane representatives to travel to Richmond. We are extremely grateful for this financial assistance and all the guidance provided so far as part of the Mission: Orange program. Learn more about JAMO on www.ASPCApro.org. We'll have a full report of our trip on the web site soon! |

OK Humane Feral Colony Managers Touching Lives
|
Oklahoma Humane Society supports a number of feral cat colony managers who take care of more than 200 colonies in the OKC area. These devoted individuals take care of and feed colonies of feral (wild) cats, anywhere from 2 or 3 to 200. They feed them rain or shine, 365 days a year. OK Humane helps them trap the colonies as part of our Trap/Neuter/Return program, where they are taken to our clinic and spayed/neutered and vaccinated. After surgery they are returned to their location, where they live out their natural lives as part of the community they've developed of other cats, and they are not reproducing, contributing to the overpopulation problem.
Our colony managers are some of the most devoted people you'll find. This note came from Sheilah, who manages several colonies in Oklahoma City: "One of my colonies is made up of cats abandoned at a very low income apartment complex. Sometimes the children at the complex, although they're very sweet little kids, get in the way of me doing what I've perceived to be my "job" as an OK Humane volunteer who is focused on TNR. I spend time with these kids, talking to them, answering their questions, asking them questions, and at times I get frustrated that they question my views about TNR.
Tonight when I stopped to feed, there were no kids around, but when I went to fill a particular dish all the way at the end of the parking lot in a hard-to-reach corner where one shy little cat hides from the other cats..." Click here to read the rest of the story! |

Missy is Practically Perfect in Every Way!
|
Hi, I'm Missy! I'm a 2 year old Keeshond/Spaniel mix. I might have some Catahoula in there too, because I have a really interesting spotty color to my fur. I'm a very unusual looking girl! I am full grown and weigh around 30 lbs. I touch people very gently, like butterfly wings. I never scratch them. That's why I'm praised for my behavior around small children. I've been sleeping at the foot of my foster mom's bed at night, but while she's at work I am kenneled. She says this is just a precaution until I know for sure I'm not being abandoned again. My foster mom also says I could teach the young pups some manners because I come by them naturally. Please grant me my wish: a permanent wonderful home of my own.

Volunteer Spotlight on.... Lacy Syverson!
|
Lacy has been involved with OK Humane since its merger with PAL-OK. As Outreach Coordinator, she organizes volunteers and fosters for Petsmart outreaches and special events, as well as finding and coordinating new outreach locations. She fosters dogs and cats and helps at the Spay/Neuter Clinic whenever she can.
She helps foster parents with vaccinations, Heartworm tests and other treatments as needed, at the office or fosters' homes. She also teaches our Humane Education class at St. Luke's, which recently included a trip with the students to the OKC shelter.
In May, OK Humane partnered with Smicklas Chevrolet to promote Friends For Life, a weekly segment on Channel 9. On alternating weeks, Christy Counts and Lacy take turns taking an animal or two and introduce them during the noon news on Fridays. Thus far, every animal introduced has been adopted within the week.
Lacy loves working with animals, and loves seeing the difference OK Humane is making for them and the people we help. She says, "I am very excited about the mission, direction and momentum the group possesses. I know we will be the solution to the animal overpopulation crisis in Oklahoma City!"
We appreciate Lacy and all her hard work!
If you have someone you'd like to nominate for the Volunteer Spotlight, send a message to news@okhumane.org. |

We appreciate the incredible energy and dedication of all our volunteers, trappers and foster parents. This organization could not accomplish anything without your talents and hard work. Thank you for all you do. There is so much on the horizon with OK Humane, and with your help we will be able to accomplish No-Kill in Oklahoma City. Together, we can do it!
