Garage Sale Brings in Double Expected Earnings
|
The OK Humane benefit garage sale was a smashing success, raising more than $4200!! We would like to thank all the volunteers, board members and people who donated items for the sale. We all brought a few boxes and bags and it added up! Please save your stuff, because we're going to do it again in October!! A news team from Channel 4 came out on Friday morning; we talked to them about OK Humane and the garage sale and all our programs. They ran the story on the Saturday morning news, and we had quite a few people come out who said they had seen the story on the news. We made money, but this was also a tremendous education opportunity. We handed out brochures on the TNR program and spay/neuter; we talked to dozens of people about fostering, volunteering and spay/neuter. Volunteers who were instrumental in the sale included Cass and Caty
Townsend, Linn Moore, Lora Holeman, Nancy Henslee, Tammy Bowman, Guy
Boye and Jacque Fuller, and especially Lynn Garman and Emily Waugh for
hosting and coordinating the sale. Thanks again to everyone who found the time to help us, even a little, with the sale. Save your stuff for the fall sale! |

OK Humane Staff Travel to Richmond, VA to Train/Compete for ASPCA Mission: Orange Program
|
Later this month, Staff and board members of OK Humane will travel with representatives of OKC Animal Welfare to the Richmond SPCA for training in the ASPCA's Join ASPCA Mission: Orange (JAMO) program. Future ASPCA Mission: Orange Target Communities will be selected from successful participants in this program, so in addition to training, our humane society will be competing against other communities hoping to be chosen for the program. JAMO communities, who are selected annually through a competitive application process, participate in one year of intensive work with ASPCA experts. Together, the communities and the ASPCA focus on collecting, analyzing and working with data to identify and implement the specific programs and practices that will increase live release rates in each of the selected communities. You can learn more about JAMO on www.ASPCApro.org. |

OK Humane Adoption Center Plans Late Summer Opening!
|
Plans have been finalized and remodeling has begun for the OK Humane Adoption Center! The building is located at 7500 N Western in Oklahoma City. It will house a 3,500 square foot adoption center and a 3,000 square foot Humane Education Center.
This is not a full-scale shelter facility. Cats will be kept here overnight and cared for by staff and volunteers during the day. Foster parents will bring dogs in the morning and pick them up in the evening. This will be a place where adopters can come every single day to see what animals we have available for adoption, providing another outlet beyond our regular Petsmart outreaches.
The Oklahoma Humane Society is very grateful to the Kirkpatrick Family Fund and their funding of this project. |

Cinco Longs for Sofa, Cuddling
|
Cinco recently celebrated her birthday in May. She is now 12 years old. She likes to sit in your lap or next to you. She is very affectionate. She likes to have her ears scratched and her chin scratched. During thunderstorms, she will talk to you to remind you that she is here and the storms aren't comforting to her. She does like to go outdoors. She would need supervision if outside. She mainly likes to check out all the smells! She does fairly well with dogs, but is not too crazy about other cats.
She likes her evening treat of canned cat food and will remind you if you are late in serving her. She likes to sleep on the bed during the day and will hide in the closet if she doesn't want to be found.
If you're interested in learning more or meeting Cinco, please email Fabrice or call 405-286-1229.

Volunteer Spotlight on.... Denise and Jerry Pilkington!
|
Denise and Jerry have volunteered for OK Humane and PAL-OK before that. They've helped in pretty much every aspect of our organization--outreaches, clinics, special events. Jerry has been volunteering
in Animal Welfare since 2003 and Denise has been a lifelong advocate. Denise is originally from Pennsylvania,
where she was instrumental in supporting legislation
and erecting signs for Geese Crossings.
Denise & Jerry volunteer every week with the OK Humane
Spay/Neuter Clinic, are active foster parents and also volunteer with the PAW Park in NW
OKC.
Their own pets include Ziggy, Joplin and two sugar
gliders.
They are very excited to share that their first grandchild,
Nora was born May 15, 2008! We appreciate you, Jerry and Denise, for all you do!
If you have someone you'd like to nominate for the Volunteer Spotlight, send a message to news@okhumane.org. |

"Happy Tails"
|
We LOVE to see pictures and hear stories of our adopted animals in their new homes! If you have one to share with us, please send it to news@okhumane.org.
This is Rex (formerly Aaron). I adopted him on March 7th. I had no intention of getting another cat but I fell in love with his little tail. I changed his name because as you can see, he is a little king. He fits in well with the other cats - he comforts the oldest one and plays with the other two. His favorit place to sleep? At my side! Diane M., OKC
I just wanted to send a quick update on Sparkz. (His original name at the Humane Society was Oliver). Sparkz loves his new home, and new big brother Spaz (who was adopted at a Mississippi Humane Society when he was a puppy). Sparkz been such a blessing to our new home, and we just bough a new home with a great big back yard for the boys to run in together! He loves to curl up with us on the couch, nuzzle with us and follow his brother around like a shadow. He's such a loving dog, but you can tell he's been through a lot. So, it's so great to know he's finally got a place he can call home. Thanks Humane Society, we love to help any way we can and can't thank you enough for helping Sparkz along his path to our hearts! Crystal W., OKC

We appreciate the incredible energy and dedication of all our volunteers, trappers and foster parents. This organization could not accomplish anything without your talents and hard work. Thank you for all you do. There is so much on the horizon with OK Humane, and with your help we will be able to accomplish No-Kill in Oklahoma City. Together, we can do it!
Sincerely,
Oklahoma Humane Society |
