Doggy Derby Provides Fun for Families and their Four-Legged Friends
|
The Central Oklahoma Humane Society invites families to bring their four-legged friends to the first annual Doggy Derby, to be held May 3, 2008 from 1-5 pm on the infield at Remington Park. This dog-friendly event will feature exciting attractions such as the Best Frisbee Dog Performance team and a concert with the Wise Guys Band. The Doggy Derby is presented by The Oklahoman Foundation. Sponsors include Barking Dog Bakery, Louise & Clay Bennett, Garman Productions, LLC, Jordan Associates, Lucky Dog Lodge, Midfirst Bank and News 9.
Celebrity judges will be in attendance to select the dog to be OK Humane's new mascot. Attendees are invited to enter their dog in the mascot competition. The winning dog will be featured in OK Humane's upcoming marketing campaign and will win a pet portrait painting by local animal artist Tiffany English of Red Headed Dog Studios. Registration for the mascot competition is required in advance at www.OKHumaneDoggyDerby.com.
Families and pets will also enjoy booths from local pet retailers, a visit with pet psychic Brenda McDonald, Polaroid pet portraits and the OK Humane pet adoption booth. Children can take part in fun activities, games and face-painting beneath the Kid's Korral.
Tickets to the OK Humane Doggy Derby are $15. Children 10 and under are admitted free. All proceeds will benefit the Oklahoma Humane Society Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic. Entry into the mascot competition is $20. |

Last Week of March Brings Good News for Four Cruelty Case Dogs
|
The last week of March was a good one for four dogs who, unfortunately, have suffered as a result of human cruelty. A Beagle who was tied to the back of a pickup and dragged for six blocks was rescued from the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter by a Beagle rescue, and her owner was arrested for felony animal abuse.
Two Pit Bulls, Twix and JoJo, who have been at the shelter since February 2007 after cruelty charges were filed against their owners were spayed on March 27th and placed into the shelter's adoption center. The shelter had to hold those two dogs until the court case was determined. A law was passed after they came in last year that makes the owner either sign the pet over to the shelter or post a bond for the dog's room and board. Hopefully, this will prevent long term shelter stays by pets subjected to cruelty.
A Black Lab mix we named Pretty (some call her Minnie) came into the shelter in February close to death and was rescued by the Oklahoma Humane Society. Pretty was put onto our Petfinder site on March 27th and is now available for adoption. As you can see from her pictures, Pretty was starving when Animal Control Officers took her from her home and filed cruelty charges against her owner. The dog who came in with her had eaten her tail and was in such poor condition that she had to be euthanized. Pretty has gained lots of weight and her wonderful Lab personality has come back. Pretty had both Ehrlichia and heartworms when we rescued her. Oklahoma Humane will be paying for treatment of both of those conditions, and once her treatments are finished we're hoping Pretty will have a home waiting for her.
The cost of caring for Pretty and getting her back in good health will far exceed her adoption fee. Oklahoma Humane charges adoption fees to cover our basic costs for getting the pet ready to be adopted (spay or neuter surgery, shots, tick and flea preventative, worming, heartworm testing for dogs and FIV/FeLV testing for cats) as well as to pay for pets like Pretty whose medical situation will result in costs that will be more than her adoption fee. To learn more about Pretty, go to our Petfinder site.

Why Positive Reinforcement?
|
by Kathy Harrison, Dog Training & Behavior Specialist
What is the big deal about positive reinforcement training anyway? Why would anyone want to mess with it when they have used coercion and gotten the results they want? I was recently in the city animal shelter and observed some couples as they brought out various dogs to meet. One couple in particular stood out to me, the husband was very stern and expected each dog to walk right next to him from the kennel to the playroom, while the wife sort of hung back and followed. The dogs were then put through a series of obedience maneuvers which entailed the husband yanking on his end of the leash and speaking sternly to the dog. I kept watching just to see if the dogs knew anything or how they would respond to such treatment from a stranger. Surprisingly, they were just happy and wiggly and didn't seem to mind at all.
Why was I surprised?...

Volunteer Spotlight on....Shelley Alvarez!
|
Shelley Alvarez has been volunteering with the Oklahoma Humane Society's Trap-Neuter-Return program since last year, but it didn't start in Oklahoma for her. It all started in Lubbock, TX back in 2001 when she saw several little hungry cats at a business strip. The cats wouldn't let her touch them and she began to do research on TNR.
When Shelley moved to Oklahoma in 2006 she had TNR'd over 400 feral cats in Lubbock herself and managed 10 separate feral cat colonies. Shelley is a great trapper with a sunny attitude and lots of fun to be around. She really enjoys reading and running and in her spare time and is a long distance online instructor for Texas Tech University. All of Shelley's animals have been rescues and there's even a couple of ear tips in the mix!
If you have someone you'd like to nominate for the Volunteer Spotlight, send a message to news@okhumane.org. |

"Happy Tails"
|
We LOVE to see pictures and hear stories of our adopted animals in their new homes! If you have one to share with us, please send it to news@okhumane.org.
I have had Sashie for a little more than 2 weeks. She is so precious and absolutely loved, spoiled and adorned. She now has 3 big sisters and a big brother. I and they love her so much! God Bless you and thank you for my Sashie. She is so healthy and happy! Carolyn I recently adopted Huey (03/15/08) & he is doing great. He & our other rescue dog, Abe, are 2 peas in a pod. Huey is still adjusting to the cats but doing well. He has been a great addition to our family. I have enclosed a picture & you can tell by the exact same look on their faces that they belong together. Thanks, Chris This is Kitty Meow Meow. I got her early Febuary at PetSmart in Edmond OK from your organization. What a joy she has been in our lives. This is just a note to say Thanks!!!! Sue Carbary - Jones OK |

We appreciate the incredible energy and dedication of all our volunteers, trappers and foster parents. This organization could not accomplish anything without your talents and hard work. Thank you for all you do. There is so much on the horizon with OK Humane, and with your help we will be able to accomplish No-Kill in Oklahoma City. Together, we can do it!
Sincerely,
Oklahoma Humane Society |
