Great Article! Blessings to Help Families Include Pets in Spiritual Lives

Pet BlessingIn an effort to help Oklahoma City residents include their pets in their families' spiritual lives, The Oklahoma Humane Society (OK Humane) has partnered with area churches to hold a series of free pet blessings.

The first blessing is scheduled for Saturday, March 22, from 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 4400 N. Shartel Ave. in Oklahoma City (NW 44th & Shartel).  The event will take place in the north parking lot.

Pastors Bryan Eckelmann, Randall Spindle and Timberly Eckelmann (MDiv.) will offer individual blessings for each pet that attends the event.  Each pet will also receive a blessing certificate as a memento of the event.

Spindle said, "We believe all creatures come from God's hands and each animal reveals one hue in the kaleidoscope of God's love."

The pet blessings are part of Humane Education, a public outreach and education program intended to teach people about the importance of animal welfare. Other elements of the Humane Education program include lesson plans in the school system and after-school programs for children of all ages.
Great Article! Doggy Derby Provides Fun for Families and their Four-Legged Friends

Doggy DerbyThe Central Oklahoma Humane Society invites families to bring their four-legged friends to the first annual Doggy Derby, to be held May 3, 2008 from 1-5 pm on the infield at Remington Park. This dog-friendly event will feature exciting attractions such as the Best Frisbee Dog Performance team and a concert with the Wise Guys Band.

Celebrity judges will be in attendance to select the dog to be OK Humane's new mascot. Attendees are invited to enter their dog in the mascot competition. The winning dog will be featured in OK Humane's upcoming marketing campaign and will win a pet portrait painting by local animal artist Tiffany English of Red Headed Dog Studios. Registration for the mascot competition is required in advance at www.OKHumaneDoggyDerby.com.

Families and pets will also enjoy booths from local pet retailers, a visit with pet psychic Brenda McDonald, polaroid pet portraits and the OK Humane pet adoption booth. Children can take part in fun activities beneath the Kid's Tent.

Tickets to the OK Humane Doggy Derby are $15. Children 10 and under are admitted free. All proceeds will benefit the Oklahoma Humane Society Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic. Entry into the mascot competition is $20.
Great Article! News From the Front
From our Foster Coordinator, Nancy Lindo:

I was at the OKC animal shelter today and it is unbelievable what can be found there.  Brittany spaniels, a cocker, a Saint Bernard, a Weimeraner puppy, a great dane, a neopolitan mastiff - I could go on and on.  And then there are the puppies.  Tiny pups with mom, 8-week old pups by the dozen.  It was nice to see the vet and techs lining them up after surgery, ready to go into adoption.  What wasn't nice to see was the row of pups and adults lined up in the back, no longer needing homes.

My heart breaks when I see this scene.  You, our fosters, can help.  Please, let me know if you have room for one dog, one pup, or a litter.  Please, let ALL of your friends, neighbors, relatives, and people you meet know about the pet overpopulation and spay/ neuter programs.

We ARE making a difference.  Can you help make a difference for just one more animal?

If you can help foster or would like more information, please contact Nancy Lindo.

Volunteer Spotlight on....Emily Waugh!
Emily with her dogsEmily has been volunteering with OK Humane since its inception, and before that with PAL-OK and VAW.  She loves fostering dogs (as frequently as her husband will let her!).  A graphic artist/web designer by trade, Emily has done a lot of pro bono work for OK Humane, including this newsletter, the Doggy Derby web site, a few T-shirts and the TNR and general brochures.  This is what she does best, and she loves being able to use her talents to help OK Humane.  "I believe so strongly in this organization and what we are going to accomplish," Emily said.  "For so long I have hoped that all the little rescues could come together under one organization and have a voice and really be effective--OK Humane is the group that is going to really make a difference in Oklahoma."

Emily also serves on the board of directors for the Friends of the Metropolitan Library System, and is the volunteer webmaster for the OKC Gridiron Club and Oklahoma City Repertory Theatre.  She works for a health care company in OKC, but has freelance clients all over the U.S.  She's been married to Mike for 7 years and they have three dogs, Oliver, Rocky and Champ.

If you have someone you'd like to nominate for the Volunteer Spotlight, send a message to news@okhumane.org.

It's Here Again: Puppy & Kitten Season

puppiesIt's Spring, and that means lots of puppies and kittens.  Please spay or neuter your pets, if you haven't already.  Please encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same.  Litters will be pouring into the shelter, and many will be euthanized simply because there's no place to put them.  Can YOU be a hero? Can YOU save a life?

Yes you can!  Provide a foster home for an animal or two or a litter.  To learn more, contact Nancy, Foster Coordinator.

Year Two of TNR Promises to be Bigger than Ever

We officially closed the books on our first year of the TNR program, and it's been one of the most successful inagural TNR programs in the country!  We altered more than 1250 cats.  Most were returned to their colonies, but many babies and tame cats were adopted into loving homes.

For TNR 2008, our goal is 2000 cats!  If you're interested in being part of this solution, contact Samantha.

OK Humane Says Goodbye to Dedicated Volunteer

Marla MartinMarla Anne Martin, 51, slipped into the arms of her Lord, Saturday, March 8, 2008. Marla was born March 5, 1957 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Marla's favorite pastimes included watching OU games with her parents and making her friends, family and cats her number one priority. She loved volunteering with the Oklahoma Humane Society. Marla loved and worked with Dr. Jim Baker for 20 years and with Kathy Dresher at OMS Partners for 10 years.

We will miss you, Marla.  We know you met up with some really happy kitties at the Rainbow Bridge, and all of you crossed over together.
Great Article! "Happy Tails"

We LOVE to see pictures and hear stories of our adopted animals in their new homes!  If you have one to share with us, please send it to news@okhumane.org.

Aurora in her new home
Just wanted to let you know that our baby girl is doing great.  She is settling in wonderfully and is an amazing little girl.  Our whole family is in love with her.  She is responding very well to the crate and house training.  She is incredibly smart and intuitive.  Our family couldn't be happier.

Ollie & Mackay
Ollie is great and Mackey absolutely loves him.  She picks him up (under the arms) and carries him across the room sometimes and he humors her.  She likes to take him to the couch, chair, whatever and put him up on it then climb us beside him and 'read' books to him.  They are super cute together and we are very happy to have him.

JD and his new family
JD with his new adoptive family
We appreciate the incredible energy and dedication of all our volunteers, trappers and foster parents.  This organization could not accomplish anything without your talents and hard work.  Thank you for all you do.  There is so much on the horizon with OK Humane, and with your help we will be able to accomplish No-Kill in Oklahoma City. Together, we can do it!

Sincerely,

Oklahoma Humane Society
