September 11, 2008 6:30 PM
This month a guest speaker will be Dave Theall and will discuss "Running and Writing Rewards."
Dave is an avid runner and past St Pete Times writer for the running column. He spent his early working years as a career Washington bureaucrat. Dave has run over 600 races including 26.2 marathons, we'll let him explain that number. He has a very interesting view of running both as a participant and as a professional writer covering the sport. |
| SPRR Board of Directors |
| The current term for the SPRR Officers and Board of Directors (BOD) ends on January 1, 2009. If you are interested in becoming an Officer or BOD member, please contact Ben Fudge. The BOD meets at 6:00 pm the first Thursday of every month at Fit for Life. The meetings are open to SPRR members if you would like to see the BOD in action.
As always, the SPRR Board of Directors likes to hear your praises and criticisms. Board members are listed below. Just click a name to send that person an email.

Information about the clinic will be provided at the September meeting.

| SPRR Racing Series |
|
Last year we introduced the SPRR Racing Series ("the Series), and are planning this year's Series for the upcoming racing season. We are also organizing a 5K and 10K Running Clinic (see above) to coincide with the Series. The Series will be similar to last year, but plan to offer bonus points for certain races this year. The races that will be part of the Series have not been determined at this time. However, they will consist of Tampa Bay area races of multiple distances over a period of several months so the Series does not favor individuals that excel at a particular distance or time of the year. During each race, SPRR members can earn points based on age-graded scoring. The points will be totaled at the end of the Series and the top three male and female runners with the highest point totals will be awarded prizes for their accomplishments. In addition, we will continue with participation awards for completing a determined number of races. The purpose of the Series is to determine the "best" runners during the racing season, encourage race directors to provide quality races, and encourage club participation at these races.

St. Pete Beach Summer 5K Series |
|
SPRR wants to thank everyone who participated in the St. Pete Beach Summer 5K Series. Your support made our first Series a success, and we are grateful.
SPRR is pleased to have organized and hosted the Series, and we hope that everyone enjoyed the events. Like most of you know, the unpredictability of running on the beach during a Florida summer provided many challenges. The first event in June was canceled due to severe weather; the July race was hot and humid, and the winds made the August race difficult. However, we hope that these challenges provided you with memories and stories to share for years to come.
Our goal was to provide runners with a well organized race and a fun post race party that allowed the running community to gather afterwards and enjoy each other's company. From the feedback we received so far, we believe that we accomplished this goal. However, it could not have been achieved without the help of some great volunteers and wonderful sponsors.

| The 2008 Myomed Ragnar Relay Florida Race - An Event to Remember |
|
What would make you want to be part of a 12 person team running across Florida? The camaraderie? The feeling of accomplishment? To be the first among your friends to run across Florida? Your competitive nature? All of the above? Whatever your goal, you can be sure that joining the SPRR team to run the Myomed Ragnar Relay on November 14th and 15th will be an unforgettable adventure.
The Ragnar Relay will be a challenging 191 mile course starting in Clearwater, crossing the state and ending in Daytona Beach. A team of 12 will each run three, 3 to 8 mile legs of the course. And, don't let the word "race" scare you away. While there are time limits (about 35 hours to run the entire race) for the Ragnar, it is by no means only for elite athletes. It's a 191 mile team building, sleep deprived, fun run and party!
If you are interested in being on our team or to be a volunteer, please email to: Sunny sunnyl@tampabay.rr.com or Tracey tekiser@yahoo.com co-captains of our team (no name yet?). Oh, and we need a team name, too. Something that works well with SPRR.
Let us know your typical training routine (eg. how many miles you run daily/weekly) and your average mile time, if known. If you have run a 5K or 10K recently, please include the race name and your finish time in the email.
Please visit the Ragnar Relay website for more details. | |
