The St. Pete Road Runners (SPRR) want to thank everyone that showed up for the first race of the St. Pete Beach Summer 5K Series on Friday, June 6. Unfortunately, a series of storms with heavy rain, lightening, and strong winds began approximately 15 minutes before the start of the race. At that time, the race committee decided to postpone the race in hopes that the storms would pass quickly and we could begin the race after a short delay. At 7:45 pm, radar showed storms were still in the area, and lightening was visible on St. Pete Beach. Therefore, the race committee decided to cancel the race for the safety of the runners and volunteer staff. The race committee was disappointed, and we are sorry that the situation did not turn out differently. However, we believe it was the correct decision given the circumstances, and we hope that you understand. On a brighter note, we were still able to provide amenities such as free food, beer, and live music, and we gave away some great raffle prizes.
 
For the runners that signed up for the June 6 race only, we will honor your June 6 race entry at either of the upcoming races on July 11 or August 8. At the registration table, please inform the race staff that you registered for the June 6 race. We will confirm your June 6 race entry and issue you a race number.
 
Regrettably, it is not logistically possible to extend the Series by including an additional race. For the runners that entered the entire Series, we will not be able to provide a refund for the June 6 race as indicated on the entry form. The entry fee for the Series was discounted; we were able to provide the post-race amenities for the June 6 race; and each Series participant received a free pair of sunglasses (a $49.95 value).
 
Again, we are disappointed the race could not be run, and we are sorry for the unfortunate weather. However, we hope you enjoyed the venue and the amenities that were provided. Please remember that the next race of the St. Pete Beach Summer 5K Series will take place at 7 pm on Friday, July 11. We hope to see you there!
