The other day, I was chatting with a couple of athletes that I teach and the discussion turned to the topic of mental training. Among some competitors, there remains a gap between training performance and race-day results. Why are some people better as "workout" athletes and lackluster as "competitive" athletes? Having trained and raced countless times in my life, including all those weekend swim meets of my youth, I've developed the following tenets for improving your "mental training":

Visualize yourself in the race as if you are on one of your most outstanding training days
  • Visualize yourself at every segment of the race
  • Create a kinesthetic understanding of how your body will be feeling at every point in the swim-bike-run
  • Concentrate on your breathing
  • Use key words or mantras that elicit positive, synchronized reminders of how you want to feel. I used to repeat: "smooth, smooth, smooth, fluid, powerful" (for those of you who recognize my distinctive running form, my mantra may not match reality, yet when I ran, my mind and body were perfectly in tune with each other)

Enduring moments of utter agony

  • Take your mind off the totality of the race
  • Refocus into the present tense and break up the race into smaller, more palatable bits
  • Relax those areas of the body that don't need to hold onto fatigue, like your face, your shoulders, your eyes

Anxiety before the race is killing my race

  • Transform anxiety into something positive and expected - we all get nervous before a big race. Use your mind and visualize anxiety as sparks of power that load up  your engine!
  • Visualize every second of the race before the race: know the course, feel your body move through every segment, experience the joy of the finish

Nuts and Bolts
In this section, I'll be sharing a few tips with you. Sometimes it will be training related, other times it may focus more on nutritional advice. Thus, the title becomes more apparent...and if it still isn't, read on:

Dave's Simple Mental Strategy Plan
  1. Practice "mental strategy planning" 5-10 minutes (2-3 times per week)
  2. Write down your physical and mental strengths in all 3 sports and repeat these out loud to yourself
  3. Visualize yourself at the race site, on race morning, at the start, throughout each segment, and at the finish
  4. Know what you want to accomplish before the race
  5. Bring emotions into your visualization practice- are you enjoying the race? Are you willing to step outside of your comfort zone?
