There's no denying there's something special about the island of Oahu. It was true when I won my first Ironman® title there in 1980, and it's still true today.
That's why I'm so excited to be a part of this year's iteration of Ironman Revisited - the fundraiser for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) that reenacts the original event and retraces its route. No cheering crowds. No cut-off times. Just you and your crew, or relay team, testing your mettle against the 2.4-mile Waikiki Rough Water Swim, the 112-mile around Oahu Bike and the 26.2 miles of the original Honolulu Marathon course. A reproduction of the coveted "Hole-in-the-Head" trophy designed by Commander John Collins and bragging rights await those who successfully navigate these challenges back-to-back-to-back.
This year's Ironman Revisited event comes with an added bonus. Not only do I get a chance to return to the site of my first Ironman triumph, but I will be hosting a two-day triathlon clinic: free for Ironman Revisited participants, but also available for outside participants. As usual, I'll be joined at the event by some of the inspirational athletes supported by CAF, including military amputee David Rozelle, who lost his lower leg in Iraq, returned to action on a prosthetic foot and finished Ironman® Kona last October.
Ironman Revisited is a major fundraiser for CAF and I think you'll find - as I and many others before me have - that it is one of the most rewarding, unique and magical experiences available to triathletes today.
I hope you'll join me at this year's Ironman Revisited. As the saying goes, they don't make them like they used to. This event, however, comes pretty darn close.
