Thoughts from The Man
The first thing I asked myself was: "Why now?" Why would I write a newsletter after thirty years in the sport of triathlon? The second thing I asked myself was: "Would anyone read it?". So after some deliberation, I decided that a newsletter is maybe more timely now than it would have been thirty years ago and that, based on my career in the sport, maybe there are people out there that might want to read it. Anyway, I hope you're that person and I hope you get something out of our fancy "new"sletter.
I've often been asked about my coaching philosophy. As you move from athlete to coach, the bridge of experience is evident. What's not always evident, however, is why you became an athlete in the first place. I didn't start out with the singular focus on only winning Ironman, though it was fantastic when it did take place! I started out with a curiosity in training and gaining self-confidence through my training. I knew going into each race that my confidence would help to support a "fast" day, a successful outcome. And I wanted my competitors to worry about me during the race. Again, the feeling of confidence invited success. So as I coached myself throughout the years and then transitioned to coaching others, I knew that the best place to start was in establishing, then building upon, an athlete's level of confidence. All the other technical stuff is secondary if you don't have the inner-drive, the mental edge and the physical foundation to take the leap.
Twice a year, I'm privileged to coach the coaches for TNT, or Team in Training. Always a fantastic group with lots of energy and verve. Well, in order for me to best "coach" them, I do not approach my role as an athlete or coach, but rather, as a teacher. So what is my philosophy on coaching? It would probably boil down to these simple sentiments: I'm a teacher, not a coach. And, by building self-confidence, any athlete has the foundation for success. |

Nuts and Bolts
In this section, I'll be sharing a few tips with you. Sometimes it will be training related, other times it may focus more on nutritional advice. Thus, the title becomes more apparent...and if it still isn't, read on:
Dave's Nut Mix
Nuts are very nutrient dense, containing 15-25% of protein by volume. They also include high amounts of Vitamin E, selenium and magnesium. The best nuts to eat are almonds and walnuts, whom I refer to as the "King and Queen" of the nut world. Almonds are high in Vitamin E and magnesium while Walnuts, among all nuts, contain the highest amount of Omega 3 fatty acids and offer natural anti-inflammatory properties. I enjoy this mix every day and encourage you to include them in your daily diet as well.
Dave's Nut Mix
(daily dose: 1 to 2 1/2 ounces)
-
equal portion of almonds & walnuts
-
1/2 portion of peanuts, pumpkin seeds, hazel nuts & brazil nuts
-
1/4 portion of sesame seeds & ground flax
-
can add dried cranberries or dried cherries for flavor and anti-oxidant boost
Nut Notes:
- use plain nuts, not roasted. Roasting changes the oil content of the nut
- Store the mix in a sealed, glass container, out of light
- Flax seeds should be stored separately and kept in the fridge. Ground just the portion you need and add them to the mix each day
- Eat the nut mix throughout the day as part of our mid-morning snack, mid-afternoon snack or as a pre-dinner snack
- For reference, 1 small handful equals one ounce, which is roughly 15-18 nuts
- One ounce of nuts equates to 80-90 calories
