Peter Garcia and Tim Leong

(L-R) Tim Leong, the Director of Communications and Community Relations for the Contra Costa Community College District and Peter Garcia, president of Diablo Valley College and former Los Medanos College president.

Dear Colleague,

Over the years, the Center for Urban Education (CUE) has committed itself to working with community colleges because they are the first entry point to higher education for most students of color. As an example of what we do, we are sharing with you a story that was recently highlighted in USC News.

CUE has been working with a multidisciplinary group of faculty and staff at Los Medanos College, a Hispanic-Serving Institution that is part of the Contra Costa Community College District located about 40 miles northeast of San Francisco.

Since September 2009, CUE has been implementing the Equity Scorecard™ with the Los Medanos team to improve retention and transfer rates for students of color attending the East Bay campus.
