College Completion Goals is Focus of Keynote Speech

On April 18, Dr. Estela Mara Bensimon, co-director of the Center for Urban Education and a Professor of Higher Education at USC's Rossier School of Education, presented at the 2010 Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) Commission Meeting in Portland, Oregon.

In a plenary session entitled "Preserving Equity in Tough Times," Dr. Bensimon spoke about what it takes to reach the college completion goals set by the Obama administration. Glenn Cummins, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, also spoke during the session.

CUE and WICHE recently formed a partnership to assist WICHE member states in achieving college completion goals. The two-year project will involve WICHE states in addressing racial equity issues and focus a team of policy analysts on identifying effective policies to promote college success.

Participants of the meeting included about 40 of the WICHE Commissioners from the Western region. Commissioners are appointed by the state governor and typically include elected officials, college administrators and community members.

CUE's STEM Toolkit Launched for Instructors, Administrators & Campus Leaders

The Center for Urban Education launched the STEM Toolkit: Tools for Increasing Latina and Latino STEM Baccalaureates on May 1 at a symposium held during the 2010 American Educational Research Association (AERA) conference. The symposium included researchers from universities around the country. The topic was "From 'Mixed Methods' to Transdisciplinary Research: Navigating Boundaries to Increase Equity in STEM Fields for Students of Color."

The presenters were: Dr. Alicia C. Dowd, CUE Co-Director & USC Rossier School of Education Associate Professor (chair); Dr. Bill Trent, University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign; Dr. Steve Hubbard, New York University; Dr. Lindsey Malcom, UC-Riverside. Dr. Fae L. Korsmo, Senior Advisor for the Office of Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), was the discussant.

The session brought together researchers investigating the causes of and possible solutions to the underrepresentation of minoritized students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) postsecondary education. This topic relates to the scholarly aspects of the STEM toolkit developed out of the Center's NSF-funded study Pathways to STEM Bachelor's and Graduate Degrees for Hispanic Students and the Role of Hispanic-Serving Institutions

The toolkit is designed for use by instructors, administrators, counselors and campus leaders at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and non-HSI's who are interested in increasing Latina and Latino STEM student enrollment and success.

Campus Effort & Collaboration in Setting Student Success Goals is Focus of Speech at the CSUs General Education in California Conference

Dr. Alicia C. Dowd was a plenary speaker during the General Education in California Conference held at California State University, Fullerton on May 3rd and 4th. Her presentation, titled Beyond Engagement: Ensuring Campus Effort for Equity and Student Success, touched on the processes to help educators move beyond engagement and take the next steps to improve equity in student learning outcomes.

Faculty, administrators, grantmakers, and national leaders in American higher education spent two days reflecting, discussing and planning where the state of higher education has been and where it might go. Among the questions asked: what are the most promising practices in general education at California's public community colleges and universities? Which of them can be shared and brought to scale, to inform new frameworks for liberal learning and transfer?

The event was hosted by a national initiative of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) called Give Students a Compass.
