Who Would You Say We Are?
Who is Evolve Chesapeake? We are soliciting your responses to try to capture in about 100 words the essence of our beloved community. With gratitude to Richard Cashen, we give you his response below:
You Will Know Them by Their Spirit
Within us lies a spirit that is from the almighty God. That spirit sleeps in most of us, or is so full of doctrines of men it just cannot shine. Most organizations are so full of these doctrines of men, the first thing they do is to try to indoctrinate you. Even though they may do this with good intentions, it's not the best thing for a lost spirit seeking refuge from the storm of multiple churches we have today. One can get very confused and disenchanted by these so-called good intentions.
I for one have been so disillusioned by the lack of truth behind these good intentions. As I see it, the blind leading the blind. In most gay-welcoming churches you hear the phrase, "It's okay to be gay," "Well, God loves you anyway"--in other words, we accept you even though you're going to burn in everlasting hell. I had been taught that from Day One; homosexuals cannot be saved. I battled that battle for years, even trying to run from who I am. Thinking that, how can I love God so much and he hates me that much? Finally, after searching the scriptures all my life, it dawned on me that is not what God was saying.
So where do I go from here? "On-line," God says. So I saw this community gathering in Annapolis. I went. There was a kind and gentle spirit I had not found in all the congregations I had known. The preaching, I thought, was way off-base. Where does this preacher get these things? After all, I know the scriptures. Did I? No! Proud and arrogant I was. I knew the Christian Bible scriptures but did not know of the other scriptures. He was not out there; I was the one way-out there. Still locked in the fundamental frame of mind. Well, it took time for me to wonder and put things in perspective, and I realized that the spirit that these people had was the real deal.
They welcomed me back with open arms, even though it may take awhile for me, hard-headed Irish-German that I am! I am slowly feeling I may have found a home while living here near Annapolis. I am even doing my art work again. Now, how's that for a good, swift kick of a good spirit right where you need it! May God bless every one of them,
