On Religio-Spiritual Unity: Invitation

The intent of our Sacred Gatherings is to invite one into deeper connection with the Sacred, with the Divine, the Holy, the Ground of Being, the UnManifest Within, with God. Our practice embraces the impulse of being spiritual but not religious. We do not meant to intimidate, coerce, manipulate one into participation or encounter. It is simply an invitation to embrace the already felt impulse to pilgrimage into experience.
I suspect that all religions and all forms of spiritual practice are attempts to express an experience of the "Greater." The command and control impulse in the human (others call this patriarchy) seeks to make one particular form normative. One's own form is seen as The Form of religio-spiritual practice by which all others are to be judged as to whether they are valid, efficacious, and worthy of allegiance.
The evolutionary challenge for humanity on the religo-spiritual front is to see the division for what it is: false! It makes no more sense to fight over our religious system language than it would to fight over whether a particular object is to be called a pomme de terre, patata, kartoffel, patata, or potato.
Ultimately at the core of every religio-spiritual system is the unity of all, creation of beloved community, and love. Fighting over whether Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed, Abraham, Moses, or Black Elk, developed the best system of articulating the human spiritual experience is the ultimate antithetical pursuit in the spiritual realm. |
Inclement Weather Policy
Sometimes we cancel Gathering because our hosts, the Annapolis Friends Meeting, close their building. In any event, it should go without saying that each person should take responsibility for their own safety in inclement weather, whether that be excessive heat, thunderstorm, or snow and ice. If it looks like weather is a factor the Board consults by phone or email to learn what is going on where people live (remember we have people attending from Baltimore to Solmomons to Washingtion, DC -- weather can vary greatly throughout that area -- that's nearly 100 miles). If the Board decides to cancel our Gathering, we will take every possible step to let everyone know by sending an email to all Companions who have email, make phone calls to those who do not, send out a special edition Constant Contact eLetter, and post it on our website. If you haven't heard, call a Board member. You must have a bulletin somewhere with the leadership's phone numbers and email! |

Bridges to the World:
International Film Festival
A FREE Activity Suggested by Beth Lanier
World Artists Experiences and the International Division of Maryland's Office of the Secretary of State, in conjunction with Frostburg University, Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, Southern Maryland Higher Education Center, Salisbury University, and Towson University, invite the public to attend free screenings of five international films, one each from Austria, Brazil, Japan, Sri Lanka, and Turkey. The Bridges to the World International Film Series is a statewide, month-long initiative in recognition of the State's global reach and a reflection of those connections here in Maryland.
The series will run for five weeks from February 13 through March 16 at five venues throughout the state and will feature films chosen by the embassies of the respective countries. Each film will be introduced, screened, and followed by a discussion. Presentations begin at 7:00 p.m. All films will be shown with English subtitles.
