INSIDERS AND OUTSIDERS

By Bishop Mike Rinehart

Here's my hunch. Everything for me rises or falls on this bet. I'm putting all my eggs in this basket:

The turnaround of the mainline churches will happen when we in those churches care as much about those outside the church, as we do those inside. To embrace relevance, we will have to let go of survival.

That's it. That's all I've got. If I'm wrong, fire me now. I'll die on this hill.

Pathway to Victory Kickoff:
Marriage Equality 2012

Scott Bowling and Dave Miller along with the Chesapeake Pride Festival Planning Committee and Board invite you to a holiday celebration and fundraiser for Equality Maryland on Wednesday, December 14th from 6:00 to 8:00P.M. at the home of Scott Bowling and Dave Miller.

Join us for a fun filled evening of food and drinks as we welcome Equality Maryland's new Executive Director Carrie Evans to Annapolis.  This will serve as the kickoff of our Pathways to Victory Campaign, as we discuss participation needs, our strategy for Marriage Equality Victory in 2012, and ways that everyone can participate in this history making event.

Please RSVP to either Scott or Kim at MarriageEqualityVictory2012@verizon.net.  If you could, please include the names and e-mail address of those attending, so we can send out directions and final details.

Welcome to the Journey of the Universe...

An Epic Story of Cosmic, Earth, and Human Transformation

This film and book project is a collaboration of evolutionary philosopher Brian Thomas Swimme and historian of religions Mary Evelyn Tucker.  They weave a tapestry that draws together scientific discoveries in astronomy, geology, and biology with humanistic insights concerning the nature of the universe.   Click here to go to journeyoftheuniverse.org to read more.

Congregational Meeting Reflection
Pastor Wayne Schwandt

WES FB WADAt times congregational meetings can feel contentious and destructive.  We each have grown up with nuclear family-based

issues concerning how we think decisions should be made in a family or, by extension, a community.  We all know how our parents fought and how they resolved or did not resolve conflict and issues in your family-of-origin's collective life.

At no other time in the life of our community are the stakes clearly so high or the participants so numerous.  Last Sunday, we had a lot of issues to talk about, including our financial issues around the 2011 deficit, trying to agree on a budget for 2012, and reflecting on the experience of the community in our Fall/Winter Gathering change of time to 4:30 PM from 6 PM.

I offer all of that to our broader community to say, "THANK YOU" to everyone who participated in the conversation.  I was truly invigorated this week by the depth of commitment of those in attendance, the mature way in which opinions were shared even when strong emotional attachment to them was expressed.  The community discussion moved me to a new position in how I solicit memorial gifts by making the General Fund a priority.  As far as I know, no one has tendered their resignation because a vote did not go their way.  While sharing passionately, we listened with open ears, heart and mind.  I hope this means that we have reached a new level of maturity as a community.  We can share our thoughts and feelings and honor each others even when they are different.  Somone can say, "I wish there were more people at the World AIDS Day commemoration" and someone else can say "I had to work" or "I had another charitable event to attend that night" and all of it can be held by the community.  When we share from the heart and listen from the heart, wisdom happens!

We do not have to agree.  We only need to be engaged and respectful in coming to a community decision.  Therein lies our future -- as a community and as a planet.

Again, THANK YOU to all who participated.
