Issue #28 March 2009
Greetings!

As spring moves forward, we've got tips to put some spring in your speeches and social media efforts. This month, my speaking schedule is blooming, too, so you'll find me in these places soon:
  • Saturday, April 18:  At the DC Science Writers Association professional development day, I'll join a panel with speakers from US News & World Report and the Washington Post to discuss social media tools for reporters and communicators. Watch the DCSWA web page for updates.
  • Tuesday, April 28:  I'm joining a panel to speak on blogging in Washington, DC, for the National Capital Chapter of PRSA. Stand by for details on the PRSA-NCC website.
  • Thursday, April 30: I'll facilitate another in the Communicating Science series of workshops sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Science Foundation, this time at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore.  Registration details are here.
  • Tuesday, May 5:  I'm keynoting the annual meeting of the Construction Writers Association in Alexandria, Va., talking about social media.
  • Mid-May:  Look for me in New York City, where the Science Writers in New York have asked me to speak on social media as a branding tool.

And yes, I'm setting up meetings and training sessions in many of these locations--contact me at info@dontgetcaught.biz to discuss your needs!

Sincerely,
President

Grow the Path of Most Acceptance
Cultivate Your Audiences--Large or
Hard-to-Find--Like These Companies
If you're following the new rules of communications, "follow the audience" should be your mantra.  That's because you'll get better results with an engaged, involved audience. Whether you're reaching employees, customers, donors, members or patients, this month we've got examples to inspire you:
  • Don't get in the way of your fans--let them carry your message. We've got examples from Coca-Cola, Fedex, and NPR's Talk of the Nation-Science Friday on Facebook, blogs and Twitter to help you carry the day.
  • Contests work with audiences in social media, whether you're reaching internal, external or all-ages audiences.Audiences want a vote and a say. Look at examples from McDonald's, a credit union and a mentoring social networking website.
  • Hard-to-reach audiences can be amassed via social media. Look at our examples of how universities, pharmaceutical companies and others with clinical trials are recruiting patients--and vice versa--using social networking sites.
