A Message from your Friends in the ELCA Youth Ministries Gathering Office

LYO President speaking
The entire staff of ELCA Youth Ministry/Gathering:  Pamela Evans, Jennifer Malwitz, Natalie Young, Rod Boriack, Heidi Hagstrom, Dianha Ortega-Ehreth, Donna Wiegel and Bill Bixby pray for you and those with whom you serve a season-- and a life--of deeper wonder and deeper joy, and deeper participation in the liberating "year of the Lord's favor..." (Isaiah 61:2, from the first reading on Advent 3)
NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR REGIONAL FACILITATORS!
Reg Facilitators
Every year, three of the terms of the Network's Regional Facilitators positions are up for election or renewal.  The Network's Regional Facilitators are the link between the Network "organization" (and we use that term loosely) and the Network on a local level.  They facilitate communication with synods, promotion of the Network and local and regional Networking.  This year, Regions 3, 7 & 9 are all up for election.  Also, Erin Morris, our Region 2 facilitator has taken a new call out of her region, so her election will be holding a special election.  For more information on the role or the facilitators, or to nominate yourself or someone else, go to the Regional Facilitators Home Page.

FormatFactory

A few weeks back I mentioned a way to use MOV files within PowerPoint by inserting them as an object and calling out to another program to play the video file. It was an imperfect solution and I really wasn't happy with it. I've been looking for a way to reliably convert MOV files into WMV files so that PowerPoint would let me use them within presentations. Finally, thanks to GeekBreek.TV with Cali Lewis #464, I've found it. FormatFactory handles all sorts of media format conversions on Windows.

QUICK QUIPS

O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer
our spirits by thine advent here;
disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
and death's dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel.
~ Fourth Verse of O Come, Come Emmanuel

Greetings!

Welcome to the Network E-News! Hopefully you will find news you can use and perhaps a bit of inspiration. During this season of Advent, may you find a little bit of time to slow down and reflect as you prepare for the celebration of the birth of our Savior.
Something for the Heart:
   by Jacqui Thone

O Come, Emmanuel. . .

O Come, O Come Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel                                     Shall come to you O Israel.

Imagine waking up one morning and suddenly your home is no longer your own, you have been forced to move to a country where you don't speak the language or understand the customs, or even know how to eat their food? You are separated from everything you know, including possible your family. In the sixth century B.C. - 600 years before Jesus was born, the people of Israel were captured by the Babylonians. Many were deported to a foreign country where they were forced to live and work by someone else's rules. Life as they knew it had changed - they were outsiders, exiles in a foreign land.

Extravaganza 2009 - WEBSITE UPDATES

LYO President speaking

We're continuing to pump new data out on to the Extravaganza as quickly as plans come together!  It is going to be an amazing event that you won't want to miss.  At the Extravagnaza, you will discover a community of colleagues that do the same thing you do day to day...that can celebrate the joys of your work...that understand the frustrations...that are willing to listen to your stories, to tell yours, and to laugh together.  There is fantastic continuing education, and incredible opportunities to worship together.

Pages in the site that we've updated this week include:
The event schedule.  We've done a little shuffling to make the schedule more efficient.
Exhibit Hall.  We keep adding more exhibitors to the event!
Travel Discounts.  We've added the info on how to get a discount on the shuttle from the airport to the hotel.  (If you're thinking about renting a car, check out our "Hertz Discount".  But also be aware that parking in downtown New Orleans is expensive.  Plan on $26/day to park at the hotel!)
Food options.  We've discovered even more local restaurants that will have great food available.

Other updates:
·   Don't forget that our late-registration deadline is January 1, 2009.  After that date, the registration costs will increase.
·   Be sure to book your housing soon!

The "Bring A Friend" promotion expires on January 1, 2009.  If you're bring an Extravagnza first-timer with you, you can get a Network embroidered fleece jacket!  Very stylish!
Now's Might Be a Good Time To Book Your Extravaganza Flight

Articles have popped up in the last week in several major newspapers that several of the major airlines are running some pretty serious sales.  With the economy in its downturn, airlines are getting more competitive to win your business.  This is just a hint that now might be a good time to go shopping for your Extravaganza flights, if you haven't found them yet!  And remember, we have additional discounts negotiated with both Northwest and Continental airlines.  Click here  for more information on travel discounts.
