LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Bayles Photo

Dear Forum Members,

I hope all of you enjoyed your summer and found some well deserved time to get away and relax! Let me start by saying how honored I am to be the new President of The Forum and to be able to serve all of you, our members. As we move along in these challenging economic times, I think our mission of leveraging the power of executive women is even more important as businesses require strong, thoughtful leadership to navigate these choppy waters.

One of the things I value most about The Forum is how much we appreciate each other's company while we are going about our work as an organization. So as we collectively pursue the "greater good for women leaders" and individually further our own passions and professions, my goal is for all of us to actively support each other in these endeavors and enjoy doing it.

My plan for the coming year is to continue to nurture the proven good work The Forum has done to fulfill our mission of expanding the impact and influence of women leaders, as well as pave new ways and make strides to further The Forum, The Forum 'Brand', and our members' interests. So I look forward to a productive and terrific year - our 35th, incidentally - as we enjoy making positive progress!

Thanks,

Autumn

THE FORUM'S 35TH ANNIVERSARY 2012 - SOME FUN FACTS

As we approach 2012 and the 35th anniversary of the founding of The Forum of Executive Women, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at the newsmakers, milestones and events in Philadelphia and across the country that shaped 1977. In each issue now through the end of 2012, we'll share a few highlights from this landmark year.

  • Of the 60 women who were invited to the first Forum meeting in 1977, can you guess what percentage came?   100%!! All 60 invitees attended the luncheon at the then-all-male Philadelphia Racquet Club.
  • Sally Ride was one of 8,000 people who applied to be an astronaut; of those, 35 were selected, and she was one of them.
  • Frank Rizzo was Mayor of Philadelphia; Jimmy Carter was President; Elvis Presley died; and
William Penn atop City Hall was still the tallest point in Center City.
  •

WE'RE COLLECTING YOUR STORIES!

Where were you in 1977, and what were you doing? Paying your dues at your first job out of college? Were you among the 60 women at that first Forum meeting in 1977? In our next issue, we'll be asking our members to share their memories of events, places and people that shaped our world 35 years ago.

If you'd like to take a moment now, please email your thoughts to us at info@forumofexecutivewomen.com and include "35th Anniversary memories" in the subject.

INTRODUCING... the new EIČ Initiative.

As previously communicated by Autumn back in August, The Forum has formed a new initiative called "EIČ - External Impact and Influence" to strategically look at how we interact with outside organizations and are able to provide influence to further our agenda.  This committee will be co-chaired by board Vice President Nila Betof and board member Sophia Wisniewska.  There are three ways to become involved in the work of EIČ, which include the following three committees: EI2, Women in Corporate Leadership and Strategic Marketing and Communications.  If you are interested in getting involved in any of these committees, please contact The Forum Office at info@forumofexecutivewomen.com or call 215-628-9944.

DID YOU KNOW... THAT THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT - AND EASY - WAYS TO GET INVOLVED WITH THE FORUM?

  • Check The Forum website! This is a great place to start. Our website provides the most

up-to-date information on Forum events, news and deadlines. www.forumofexecutivewomen.com

  • Let us know if there is a committee that interests you - there are ten diverse groups
    from which to choose
  • Try one (or more) of our five affinity group meetings
  • Attend one of our four CEO Chats offered throughout the year
  • Engage a new member to come with you to a Meet The Forum regional breakfast meeting
  • Challenge yourself to get involved
  • Join The Forum LinkedIn group and share your thoughts.  (To join our group, you must first become a member of LinkedIn, www.linkedin.com. Then go to Groups and request to join The Forum of Executive Women.)

Many of our members are interested in getting involved in some way - such is the nature of our dynamic, diverse and energetic organization.  But as with many new opportunities, the biggest challenge is often knowing where to begin.  Whether you'd like to try something new, or revisit a
group you've enjoyed before, please consider contacting Forum Executive Director Sharon Hardy. She'll be happy to discuss with you what your interests are and which of the activities might be a good fit for you.

Sharon notes that, "Everyone's time, needs and interests are different, which is why The Forum offers such a variety of avenues for women to engage, and why our organization is so robust.  There is truly something for everyone.  Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions, or if you are looking for ways to become more involved in The Forum. "  SharonHardy@forumofexecutivewomen.com or 610-617-4556.

Ten Committees:

      • Board Training Subcommittee
      • EIČ - External Impact and Influence Initiative
      • Engagement Committee
      • Governance Subcommittee

      • Mentoring Committee
      • Program Committee
      • Sponsorship Strategic Outreach Committee
      • Strategic Communications Committee

MENTORING PROGRAM UPDATE

The Forum Mentoring Program has supported the professional advancement of 100 professional women since its beginning in 2006. As it moves into its 2012 season, the Mentoring Committee is recruiting Forum members to be mentors - a very rewarding way to get involved in The Forum and live our mission.

Former Mentee and PWR President Melissa Dietrich commented on this powerful experience:
"As a Mentee alumna, I was completely impressed with The Forum's Mentoring Program: beginning with the orientation and developmental programs, to the program survey and results discussion at the end of the year. Perhaps most striking was the openness and giving nature of The Forum member Mentors.  I really appreciate and thank the program for the wonderful opportunity to further my professional development."

New to the Mentoring Committee, Forum member Linda Stone encourages your participation. She is now Vice-Chair of the committee and says, "The Mentoring format provides a way to have a significant impact with a relatively small investment of time.  Every Forum member has experiences and insights that will benefit our Mentees." The program is conducted in a circle format with the mentees facilitating most of their meetings.

If you would like to join this meaningful program, your commitment as a Mentor will be to attend at least three Mentoring Circle meetings during calendar year 2012.  Training will be provided at our Mentoring Orientation on the evening of Monday, December 5, 2011.
