SPECTRUM PRESENTS GEN SILENT: THE FILM
with special guest, filmmaker Stu Maddux
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 7:00 PM
THE REDWOODS
40 CAMINO ALTO, MILL VALLEY
RSVP requested to (415) 472-1945 ext. 209
GEN SILENT is a new documentary from award-winning director, documentary filmmaker, and Marin County resident, Stu Maddux. What would you do if you were old, disabled or ill -and the person feeding you put down the spoon and explained that you are going to hell unless you change your sexual orientation? Sound absurd? According to social workers, it's happening every day.
This hour-long film explores the challenges facing lesbian..., gay, bisexual, and transgender older adults who must depend on a system of care that is reluctant to recognize their needs. As we witness the challenges that these men and women face, we also see hope as each subject crosses paths with an impassioned professional trying in their own way to change an entire care industry.
Don't miss this opportunity to see a film that is changing hearts and minds across the country, about LGBT people.
For more information about the film, visit the GEN SILENT website. |

CALIFORNIA REDUCING DISPARITIES PROJECT:
TAKE THE SURVEY
Many LGBT people face discrimination simply for being who they are. This discrimination takes its toll on LGBT communities, causing many LGBT people to struggle with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, substance abuse and suicidal thoughts.
The mission of the Reducing Disparities Project is to assess the mental wellness needs of LGBT communities across the state of California and make even better assistance available.
This survey is for everyone! And the study needs your voice to document the true diversity of our communities so that the ways we are treated unequally can be recognized. Spectrum is assisting with the distribution of the survey here in the North Bay. The goal is to have at least 2,500 people take the survey within the next two months. Help us reach that goal by taking the survey, and sending the survey on to friends and family in California. THANK YOU!

ACTION ALERT
PROTECT FAIR
The FAIR (Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, Respectful) Education Act is a common sense law that requires schools to integrate factual information about social movements, current events and history of people of color, people with disabilities and LGBT people into existing social studies lessons. It also prevents schools from adopting instructional materials that discriminate.
The FAIR Education Act was signed into law in July of 2011. The very next day, anti-equality extremists filed paperwork to place a referendum to overturn the law on the June 2012 ballot. They have until October 12 to submit more than half a million valid signatures to qualify for the ballot.
Led by Equality California, Gay-Straight Alliance Network and the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers, a broad coalition of advocates for equality (including Spectrum LGBT Center) have launched a coordinated effort to protect the Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act and to educate the public about its impact.
The coalition includes people of faith; labor organizations; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights groups; disability rights advocates; racial justice organizations and many other groups who care about equality.
Opponents of the FAIR Act are using this as an opportunity to continue promoting a fear-based agenda - just like we saw during the Proposition 8 ballot initiative. Find out how you can take action now to counter these tactics.
