 Statins and Rheumatoid Arthritis

A new multi-hospital 4,000 patient study of the benefit of statin therapy for rheumatoid arthritis has begun enrolling in the UK in a national five-year trial.

People with rheumatoid arthritis have long been known to have an increased risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. After all, they are chronically ill, usually have been for decades, during which time they are intensively treated with powerful medications such as gold, methotrexate and the highest tolerable doses of anti-inflammatory agents such as prostaglandins and Cox 2 inhibitors. This alone may well account for increased cardiovascular risk.

I have little doubt that the use of statins for their powerful anti-inflammatory effect will prove beneficial just as it would be in other autoimmune and organ transplant cases as long as the mevalonate pathway is not compromised by excessively high doses.

Is Cholesterol Relevant to Heart Disease?
For years I have been saying that cholesterol is irrelevant to cardiovascular disease. At first my "hopeless bias" was based primarily on my awareness that in some 50% of new heart attacks, cholesterol values were well within the accepted norm for the times.

And this observation has persisted over the years. The hypothesis for cholesterol causality did not fit. Additionally cholesterol seemed so important to body function i.e. membrane function, ATP and anti-oxidation. A biochemical this important having such a lethal dark side made no sense.

"The Statin Damage Crisis" by Dr. Duane Graveline MD

BooksDr Graveline's third book on statins called "The Statin Damage Crisis" is now available.

Originally planned as a new edition to "Statin Drugs Side Effects," it has been released as a stand alone title so that the highly relevant material in "SDSE" will still be available.

Dr Graveline wrote the following introduction to this latest title:

Early on my NASA doctors told me my amnesia response to statins was nothing but a coincidence but I persevered to write my first book, "Lipitor, Thief of Memory" and now find that over 1,000 cases of amnesia and memory loss have been reported to the FDA, just from Lipitor alone.

Then I learned of statin damage to nerves and muscles and profound behavioral and personality changes, demanding I write a second book, "Statin Drugs Side Effects." Even this broadly encompassing book was insufficient to describe what I have learned more recently of the truly dark side of statins - their ability to alter the very fabric of our makeup.

I had long wondered why muscle and nerve damage seemed permanent and even progressive like my own ALS-like condition. Now I have found that the ultimate effect of statins on CoQ10 and dolichols is to damage the DNA of the mitochondrial life - force within our cells - mitochondrial mutation masquerading as premature old age.
