My Statin Story - Summing it up |
|
After almost a decade of studying the mechanisms of actions of the statins, I am close to the end of my research needs. Actually, everything that needs be said about the statin drugs is on the website and in my books. There is now very little reason for my further input.
When, after Lipitor was started on me at 10 mg/day for my mildly elevated cholesterol and I experienced my first episode of transient global amnesia, abruptly losing my ability to formulate new memory for some 6 hours accompanied by a retrograde loss of memory for some 10 years, I reluctantly accepted the diagnosis of my doctors that statins did not cause this but quit the statin on my own because of my suspicions.
The next year at Johnson Space Center when at the insistence of my doctors I went back on Lipitor at 5 mg/day and I experienced my second episode of TGA, erasing 56 years of adult life from my mind for 12 hours, my doctors all said "amazing coincidence" but I was then convinced of the statin drug's culpability. I knew I was correct in my suspicions that there was much unknown about these so-called reductase inhibitors.
Now, after almost ten years of study my goal is fulfilled. I know exactly what these statin drugs are capable of and with my three books and well over 200 articles on the website, I now have shared all of this. Although more information is coming in each day from researchers in this field, most of it merely serves to corroborate what I have already warned about.
Now I have told you all I know. I have done my job. Please accept my apologies for also being near 80 and "out of gas." Many doctors and other qualified people have taken up the banner and will guide you. It has been a privilege to bring you this information over the years.

The Future of the spacedoc.net Newsletter and Site |
|
|
There are two final statin related articles from Dr. Graveline in this newsletter.
However, Dr. Graveline will continue to contribute articles on a diverse range of topics. In the next newsletter Dr. Graveline covers Mitochondrial Genesis. In his own words he states:
"This is extremely exciting information - to be able to actually increase mitochondria. Earlier my focus was on maintenance and repair of damaged mitochondria. Mitochondrial genesis is a new concept making mitochondrial restoration an even more feasible possibility."
A number of guest writers have contributed articles over the past few months and this will continue. Next up will be Uffe Ravnskov ( author of The Cholesterol Myths: Exposing the Fallacy That Saturated Fat and Cholesterol Cause Heart Disease and Fat and Cholesterol are Good for You.)
This newsletter will soon announce a few new short videos of Dr. Graveline - links will be here in a couple of weeks.
Dr. Graveline, who has been interviewed hundreds of times over the years, is also planning on conducting a few interviews himself. More details to follow in the newsletter.

Selenium and Selenoproteins - Impact of Statins |
|
Most of the information about the role of selenoproteins in humans has come in the past decade paralleling the marketing of statin drugs. The use of statin drugs has served to increase attention to the role of selenoproteins in humans, since statins tend to block the vital mevalonate pathway by which selenoproteins are utilized.
Selenium deficiency has been known for years as a disease of large ruminants. In the UK it has the name of White Muscle Disease (WMD), a degenerative muscle disease caused by a deficiency of selenium in the soils and forage. Symptoms are those of heart failure and/or generalized muscle weakness.

Statins and DNA Damage - Statins for Children? |
|
|
I was seeking an explanation for why so many of the statin side effects such as muscle pain and weakness, the varied neuropathies and the ALS-like neuromuscular degenerations appear permanent. If the problem was due to deficiency of CoQ10, why do they not respond to full replacement of CoQ10? The common denominator in many of these cases appeared to be premature aging. Only one thing can cause that, I deduced - mitochondrial mutations. Finally I had an assessment of statin damage that made sense - a logical end product of CoQ10 and dolichol inhibition. "The Statin Damage Crisis" by Dr Duane Graveline M.D.
Dr Graveline's third book on statins called "The Statin Damage Crisis" is now available.
Originally planned as a new edition to "Statin Drugs Side Effects," it has been released as a stand alone title so that the highly relevant material in "SDSE" will still be available. Dr Graveline wrote the following introduction to this latest title:
Early on my NASA doctors told me my amnesia response to statins was nothing but a coincidence but I persevered to write my first book, "Lipitor, Thief of Memory" and now find that over 1,000 cases of amnesia and memory loss have been reported to the FDA, just from Lipitor alone.
Then I learned of statin damage to nerves and muscles and profound behavioral and personality changes, demanding I write a second book, "Statin Drugs Side Effects." Even this broadly encompassing book was insufficient to describe what I have learned more recently of the truly dark side of statins - their ability to alter the very fabric of our makeup.
I had long wondered why muscle and nerve damage seemed permanent and even progressive like my own ALS-like condition. Now I have found that the ultimate effect of statins on CoQ10 and dolichols is to damage the DNA of the mitochondrial life - force within our cells - mitochondrial mutation masquerading as premature old age.
