Dr. Kilmer McCully, M.D. - Homocysteine

Dr. Kilmer McCully M.D. has written a series of articles for spacedoc.net.  The first in the series was on Cholesterol:

Homocysteine - by Kilmer McCully, M.D.
Because the B vitamins folic acid, pyridoxine (vitamin B6) and cobalamin (vitamin B12) are all involved in normal metabolism to prevent excessive production of homocysteine, the homocysteine theory of arteriosclerosis implicated deficiencies of these vitamins in human arteriosclerosis, heart attacks, strokes and amputations from vascular disease.

The sensitive vitamins folic acid and pyridoxine are destroyed by traditional methods of food processing, such as milling of grains, canning, extraction of sugars and oils from whole foods, and addition of chemical additives to bleach or preserve foods, and this theory helped to explain the large increase in vascular disease in the early and mid 20th century.

I spent 40 years, the major part of my professional career, pursuing the connection between homocysteine, cancer, arteriosclerosis, and diseases of aging. The purpose of this series of articles is to discuss the way in which cholesterol, homocysteine, and infections interact in the cells and tissues of the body to promote these serious diseases.

Lipoprotein(a) and Heart Disease
Lipoprotein(a) resembles cholesterol and often has been mistaken for LDL cholesterol.

However Lp(a) is not LDL cholesterol. Studded with specialized receptors for collagen particles, it is one of the most "sticky" substances in the human body, binding freely with lysine and proline fragments of our collagen matrix.

Any endothelial damage sufficient to expose collagen components results in a firm and protracted binding of Lp(a) to these components at the damage site, effectively sealing it. Hence Lp(a) is called thrombogenic.

It is responsible for many of the toxic effects formerly attributed to cholesterol and its LDL carrier. It may damage the cardiovascular system even more actively in the presence of homocysteine - another risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

"The Statin Damage Crisis" by Dr Duane Graveline M.D.

BooksDr Graveline's third book on statins called "The Statin Damage Crisis" is now available.

Originally planned as a new edition to "Statin Drugs Side Effects," it has been released as a stand alone title so that the highly relevant material in "SDSE" will still be available.

Dr Graveline wrote the following introduction to this latest title:

Early on my NASA doctors told me my amnesia response to statins was nothing but a coincidence but I persevered to write my first book, "Lipitor, Thief of Memory" and now find that over 1,000 cases of amnesia and memory loss have been reported to the FDA, just from Lipitor alone.

Then I learned of statin damage to nerves and muscles and profound behavioral and personality changes, demanding I write a second book, "Statin Drugs Side Effects." Even this broadly encompassing book was insufficient to describe what I have learned more recently of the truly dark side of statins - their ability to alter the very fabric of our makeup.

I had long wondered why muscle and nerve damage seemed permanent and even progressive like my own ALS-like condition. Now I have found that the ultimate effect of statins on CoQ10 and dolichols is to damage the DNA of the mitochondrial life - force within our cells - mitochondrial mutation masquerading as premature old age.
