CRP ( C-reactive protein ) and Statins
Dr Graveline - creamThe reason that over half of the victims of heart attacks and strokes have normal serum cholesterol values is because cholesterol is not the cause of atherosclerosis, inflammation is.

Recently a new target group for reductase inhibitors (statins) was announced: individuals with normal cholesterol levels.

A study found that statins protect against heart attacks and strokes even in older adults without known cardiovascular disease or diabetes and with low cholesterol as long as these patients also had high levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) a blood marker for inflammation.

Statins and Hair Loss
Along with such well known side effects as erectile dysfunction and loss of libido, hair loss, fundamentally a factor of sexuality, almost seems inevitable.

Certainly the numbers of people reporting this effect convinces me that a relationship exists but I also suspect it is grossly under-reported since very few people would expect this common condition to be related to intake of statin drugs

I have two possibilities for the mechanisms by which statins contribute to hair loss.

My Statin Story - Readers' Letters
Less than a year ago a new message thread was started on the statins forum called My Statin Story where readers were able to post their own experiences with statin drugs.

Since then these accounts have been visited over 15,000 times. Many readers have identified their own problems among the 27 posted so far.

Anyone can read these accounts and, after registering on the forum, may post their own for others to read.

Books by Dr Duane Graveline MD MPH
"The Statin Damage Crisis" by Dr Duane Graveline M.D.

BooksDr Graveline's third book on statins called "The Statin Damage Crisis" will be available in March.

Originally planned as a new edition to "Statin Drugs Side Effects," it will instead be released as a stand alone title so that the highly relevant material in "SDSE" will still be available.

Dr Graveline wrote the following introduction to this latest title:

Early on my NASA doctors told me my amnesia response to statins was nothing but a coincidence but I persevered to write my first book, "Lipitor, Thief of Memory" and now find that over 1,000 cases of amnesia and memory loss have been reported to the FDA, just from Lipitor alone.

Then I learned of statin damage to nerves and muscles and profound behavioral and personality changes, demanding I write a second book, "Statin Drugs Side Effects." Even this broadly encompassing book was insufficient to describe what I have learned more recently of the truly dark side of statins - their ability to alter the very fabric of our makeup.

I had long wondered why muscle and nerve damage seemed permanent and even progressive like my own ALS-like condition. Now I have found that the ultimate effect of statins on CoQ10 and dolichols is to damage the DNA of the mitochondrial life - force within our cells - mitochondrial mutation masquerading as premature old age.
