Cancer and Statins

Dr Graveline - creamHigh-dose statin therapy may be more likely to promote tumor growth than low-dose statin therapy, particularly in women.

The Treating New Targets (TNT) study, reporting on the effects of aggressive LDL cholesterol lowering in women with stable coronary heart disease ( median age of 63.5 years ) revealed a significant excess in cancer mortality among the women treated with Lipitor 80 mg daily compared to the women treated with Lipitor 10 mg daily.

Among the statin treated patients, the increase in cancer mortality was equal in magnitude to the decrease in cardiovascular disease mortality, leaving total mortality unchanged.

Verapamil and Statins
Co-administration with verapamil may significantly increase the plasma concentrations of Zocor® and Mevacor® and potentiate the risk of statin-induced myopathy according to the Study of the Effectiveness of Additional Reductions in Cholesterol and Homocysteine (SEARCH).

This is not well known among physicians and is seldom considered, even when a patient on the combination presents with muscle complaints.

Verapamil is one of the group of drugs called calcium channel blockers, used frequently over two decades for hypertension, angina, arrythmias and even cluster headaches.
