This Week: #3: Don't Make Assumptions

One of the fastest ways to put yourself in Hell is by an making assumption. You think you know what someone is thinking ("she doesn't like me, I could tell by the way she faked that smile") and you use your fantasy against yourself, judging yourself and using your word against yourself. 

In conscious relationships we must ask questions instead of making assumptions. To ask a question, you can't be afraid of the answer-- you must be willing to hear and know the truth. Most normal romantic relationships are based on old agreements to NOT ask questions. People domesticate each other, then expect their partners to read their minds and know what they are thinking or needing. When their partner gets it wrong, they take it personally and again use their word against themselves.

We also assume the car will stop when we are in the crosswalk, nobody will notice we are late for work again, it doesn't do any good to vote, people from a certain race are unfriendly, and on and on. Many people live in a world that is a fantasy created by their assumptions-- and then are hurt or angry when the real world doesn't conform to their fantasy world. 

We can re-train our minds to pay attention to facts and reality, to ask questions without fear of the answers, and to be present in the What IS, instead of dreaming about what we assume is or should be.
