"TAKING THINGS PERSONALLY" 

Agreement #2 of Miguel Ruiz' Four Agreements is the one people tell me they have the most trouble keeping. And it isn't surprising, since all the domestication in our childhoods and the dream of the planet based on that domestication support us taking people, events, institutions, and most of the universe personally.

When our parents said "You make me so angry/ disappointed/ proud/ sad/ happy/ hurt/ etc, when you do that," they were teaching us that what we did directly created their reactions, and it was very personal. In order to be worthy of their love, attention, care, shelter-- and to assure our survival-- we had to do what they liked, and avoid what they rejected is for.

My short cut to what it means to take things personally is:  If we are using the outside world in any way to assess our value or non-value, if our worth is determined by what other people say, by the unfolding of events-- then we are believing those people and events have the power to determine our worth. AND THAT IS NOT TRUE!!

You have worth because you are here! You have worth because Life put you here, as a unique and beautiful expression of that Life. There is nothing you have to prove or justify to be here, to be worthy of Life. You ARE life. 

We are going to explore these ideas on my show tonight. I want to prove to you that love is not a commodity outside of yourself you have to get it right for, bargain for, or take hostage. I want to remind you that everyone is dreaming, and what they say or do is an expression of how they are dreaming you, and has nothing to do with you! Your value has nothing to do with other people, events, institutions, or anything that happens in the universe. 

THE UNIVERSE IS NOT PERSONAL!

This is especially true in our relationships. We can never really experience the true love of conscious relationships if we are taking things personally. If we are, we will have to duck and bob and weave to avoid being rejected, and we will have to manipulate our own and others' reality to try earn their approval. 

It hasn't worked and no matter how hard you try it will never work!
