Tonight: Forgiveness in honor of Easter Sunday ("Forgive them father, they know not what the do"). On the 15th: Emotional Intimacy. No show on the 22nd, I'll be driving from Mexico to California for the summer season. The Joydancer Weekly Word: "Forgiveness"
HAPPY EASTER!
As part of my process on thinking about forgiveness I read a fascinating paper online arguing about whether Christian forgiveness is conditional (on repentance) or unconditional (forgiving all)-- and the conclusion reached: It is both! Wow, sometimes religious doctrines of all faiths need a careful and clever dance to get through all the traps of logic and contradiction they have to put up with.
But all is well. I'm here to offer you "Joydancer Toltec Forgiveness." I love the story about Jesus being on the cross, looking out over the soldiers and others gathered around, and saying: "Forgive them father, they know not what they do." He's not saying "forgive a wretch like me," like the well-known song. He's not saying "forgive only the ones that feel sorry about nailing me up here."
Jesus said simply "forgive them" -- because they don't know what they are doing. The article I read says this was a "temporary suspension of punishment," so god wouldn't destroy them immediately. A difficult dance. Religions of the books have to dance this dance, because if we are automatically forgiven because we can't make mistakes or sin... because we don't have awareness of why we are acting the way we are-- then there is no reason to fear the punishment of a god and without fear no organized religion can survive.
But I didn't come here to talk about religions. They can do that themselves. What I came here to do is offer you a rather radical concept of forgiveness: There is nothing to forgive. I've done radio shows "proving" we are all perfect the way we are, and how we can't succeed or fail. Listen to Archives here. They are the foundation for this concept of forgiveness, and Jesus said it himself.
The religious and civil leaders, soldiers, disciples, haters, mothers, lovers, and others involved in the drama of the Jesus story were all doing their best, following the dictates of their own personal dreams. The same is true for us and all the people in our lives. We are all dreaming, we are all programmed, and we are all doing our best in each and every moment.
If we are all doing our best, and can't know the outcome of any action we take, we "know not what we do." And I say, if we can't know how our actions fit into the giant action <-> reaction universe we're part of, then we deserve to forgive ourselves and each other for not knowing.
Everyone is always doing their best, and when I acknowledge that I am accepting everyone and their actions as part of the divine perfection-- I am not a victim and therefore there can be no perpetrator to forgive.
If you would like to participate in a deeper conversation on this subject, join me Easter Sunday evening at 7:00 pm PDT, HERE. Call in on the phone or listen and share on the web. I would love to hear your thoughts. * Who can't you forgive?
* Why is it hard? * What do you think of the thoughts in the article? * Are you a Christian? Other religion?
* Have I supported or offended your beliefs? Let's talk about it.
We're in this together. Remember, if you can't join me on Sunday, you can listen to the archives any time, HERE. There's good stuff there.
Allan

"Allan Hardman offers a unique blend of spiritual psychology, inner child work, and timeless wisdom-- combined with a powerful affirmation that we were all born as the perfect manifestation of love. He is a cross between the old country doctor doling out corny humor along with his prescriptions, and the ruthlessness of a zen master, always cutting to the heart of the matter."
