Begin the
School Year
with the
End in Mind

The late Stephen H. Covey said, "Begin with the end in mind."

What are your child's goals for this school year? What are yours? What can you do together to increase the odds of accomplishing these goals?

We know how important it is to have a wonderful place to study, a convenient place for the backpack, and an organized place for school papers. Have three bins at the ready when it's time to unpack the backpack--one for papers that need parent signatures and/or money, one for those papers that need completion by the student, and one for those papers that are finished and can be filed away.

School nights last a few short hours. If the evening is five hours long then work with your child to create a schedule that matches the time available. Be sure to include leisure time and homework time and remember to post the schedule.

Work together to make bedtime easier and morning time calmer. Rough mornings require recovery which can take time away from school. If stressful mornings were a part of family life last year, remind your child of this and enlist their help to come up with a solution. Even if your child's solution doesn't sound like a good idea to you, respectfully tell your child that you will try it for one week and see how it goes. After that week assess what worked and what you want to try next?

Cultivate that partnership feeling. This fosters that "ally" relationship and helps everyone accomplish their goals.

Q: My child has been playing video games a lot this summer. Now that school is starting back up what can I do to help him transition to less playing time and more studying time? Also, how much video game playing time is okay?
