Relationship Repair 101

Are consequences and punishment not working anymore? Do you feel at a loss when it comes to getting your child to do what you say or to even obey the house rules? And, the harder you come down on your child the worse things get, sort-of like squeezing a banana--the more you squeeze, the more the banana looses its integrity.

When the emotions calm down you might feel like your child just doesn't care anymore, and the closeness you once experienced is fast fading away.

You may not realize it, but you are in the middle of a power struggle.  Before things get worse, you can take steps to improve the situation.  I can assure you that your child wants this as much as you do.

First, be sure your children know how much you love them. Suggestions found in the book Five Love Languages of Children are invaluable (see links to right).

Second, I encourage you to find a positive parenting class that will be encouraging, helpful and inspiring. Youth Eastside Services is offering several classes this summer on Positive Discipline and one on Chore Wars!  Click here for information.

Lastly, I encourage you to engage in conversations with your child about the child's underlying beliefs regarding family life. The type of conversations I am talking about are the ones with the child doing most of the talking and the parent doing most of the listening. You may be surprised by what you learn about your children and their perception of family life.

Q: My 3-year-old child will not listen to me!  I am tempted to spank my child to get her to do what I say! When it is time to leave the house, I just can't get her to stop what she is doing. Sometimes it seems impossible for me to get her shoes on!  I get so mad at her that I just can't seem to control myself. YIKES!  Any advice?
