Issue 1
The Importance of
Parental Allies for Children

Are you your child's ally? If a young person doesn't feel as if they can talk to their parents, who will they turn to for advice? Possibly another trustworthy adult. Or, maybe a peer with limited life experience or an untrustworthy adult who says what the child wants to hear.

Being an ally starts with good communication and tone is critical. Contempt or criticism coming from a parent towards a child hurts the parent-child relationship. One way to talk with children is to take on a loving, firm, but friendly voice. Think about a time someone used a caring conversational tone to teach or guide you, then try to use the same tone with your children.  It takes practice, but before long you will do it without thinking.
Positive Discipline Classes
New series starts this month

Positive Discipline builds better relationships with your children through communication and action. Parents who attend our classes have a better understanding of their child's temperament and how that impacts the family, and they feel more confident about their parenting approach. Children also report more positive relationships with parents who undergo Positive Discipline training.

New classes start this week. For more details, click here. To register call 425.747.4937 or email.
Next issue, what helps and what hurts in positive family communication.

Keep positive!

Ask The
Parent Coach

Q: My 2-year-old is having a tough time with transitions--or should I say, I'm having a tough time with how my 2-year-old handles transitions--putting on clothes, diaper changes, leaving home, returning home. I know it's never easy, and I practice many of the strategies you read about, but none of them really seem to help avert meltdowns. Should we just grin and get through it?
