Helping Your Kids With Grief
Practical advice for parents
Recently, we've had some very public stories of death, including a Woodinville teacher and a Kirkland high school student. When death happens to someone close to us, the feelings can be difficult for children to process, especially when violence is involved. No matter the age, experience or personality of your children, there are a few important truths to remember when talking with them about death, click here.

Kids, Families, Courage and Hope
Join Elizabeth Smart at our annual Breakfast Youth Eastside Services is pleased to welcome Elizabeth Smart as the keynote speaker at the Invest in Youth Breakfast on Tuesday, March 13, at Meydenbauer Center. This is Ms. Smart's first keynote speech in the Puget Sound area . Ms. Smart's life is truly about living beyond tragedy. She was abducted from her bedroom at age 14 and found nine months later on March 12, 2003. In the nine years since she was abducted, Ms. Smart has grown to be a remarkable woman---- bravely testifying before Congress and in the trial of her abductor, attending college, starting a foundation and working as a commentator for ABC News. Her story is one of hope and inspiration. The volunteer breakfast committee is led by Microsoft's Jennifer Ivan, with Kathi Goertzen of KOMO 4 News serving as community co-chair. Guests will hear the remarkable stories of triumph from YES clients. YES is still accepting Table Captains and Corporate Sponsors, who receive two tickets to attend an exclusive meet-and-greet with Elizabeth after breakfast. Click here for more details. |

Last year, Youth Eastside Services helped 4,442 clients and their family members overcome obstacles in their lives like substance abuse, physical abuse, depression, anxiety and grief. Many of our clients have insurance that covers the cost of treatment, but some have neither insurance nor the means to cover the cost of service. That's why YES raises money through events like our Invest in Youth Breakfast---- to ensure everyone gets the help they need regardless of ability to pay. Last year, the cost of uncompensated care rose 24.3%, on top of a 25% increase the previous year.
Alisa, whose father committed suicide after he was caught sexually abusing her and a friend, credits YES for helping her move onto happiness as a wife and mother. Corinne, who turned to drugs to cope with her depression, is making great strides in her recovery. The children YES serves are our neighbors, friends and kids' schoolmates. I hope you will join me for breakfast next month and help ensure no one is turned away for inability to pay. If you can't make it this year, any donation makes a difference. Sincerely,
Patti Skelton-McGougan
Executive Director
