When Your Teen Wants a Tattoo or Body Piercing
Talking about this big decision
Like the youth of the 1960s, who expressed themselves with long hair and funky clothes, today's teens are using body markings to be 'different' and express their individuality. A piercing or tattoo is a way your teen says, "I'm growing up and making my own decisions, even if you don't like it!" You can say no, but how do you both respect your teen's need for independence and avoid rebellious behavior?

World Series Champion Jamie Moyer
Visits Camp Mariposa
Free camp helps kids affectected by a family member's substance abuse
World Series Champion Jamie Moyer and his wife, Karen, visited with 20 kids at Camp Mariposa as part of The Moyer Foundation's partnership with YES to serve kids affected by the drug or alcohol addiction of a family member. The kids got the chance to meet the Moyers on Friday evening and share some of the reasons they think the camp is important. Jessie M., age 12, said "It's important for us to know it's not our fault."
Led by YES' experienced counselors, kids learn coping skills and the impact substance abuse has on them and their family. It also increases their knowledge of available resources and educates them about their predisposition for substance abuse, helping them avoid repeating generational patterns. The camp takes place on the grounds of Camp Waskowitz in North Bend and is offered free of charge to approved participants several times per year thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Moyer Foundation.

Important trends you want to know about
"Bath Salts" are a New Drug Trend--The Office of National Drug Control Policy has just issued a warning against the newest synthetic drug often marketed as "bath salts" and sold legally under brand names like "Purple Wave" and "Ivory Wave" on the Internet, in smoke shops and other places. It can produce a high similar to LSD or Ecstasy when smoked, injected or snorted, but it's a dangerous high that has harmed and sickened many. For more information, click here.
Marijuana Reform Sends Mixed Message to Teens--In response to the Monitoring the Future Survey released by the National Institute of Drug Abuse, Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske pointed to the debate over marijuana legalization as a reason for increased use citing the conflicting messages it creates. Getting Kids Off to the Right Start
Program supports young parents in raising healthy kids
This year has been one of enormous change for Carrie. She separated from an abusive, controlling boyfriend, went to court to establish paternity and custody of her baby, received training in phlebotomy from the Renton Technical College and got a job at a local medical center. She and her daughter live with Carrie's mother now and the three are a strong supportive unit.
Carrie was motivated to leave her abusive situation when the YES Healthy Start staff discussed with her the impact of domestic violence on children. The staff also shared community resources with Carrie to help her find childcare and programs where she could receive training. Although it's been a challenge to now leave her daughter with a babysitter during the day, Carrie is happy to be in a much stronger emotional and financial situation, and has confidence in her family's future.
Healthy Start is a home visiting program for young parents that helps nurture baby-parent bonding, healthy child development, and sound parenting skills. It's a collaborative program between YES and other human service agencies that, unfortunately, lost its county funding during the last budget cuts and has been forced to cut back. You can help by making a donation of cash, baby supplies or gift cards.

Invest In Youth Breakfast
Be a sponsor or table captain
Each year YES holds only one fundraiser--the Invest in Youth Breakfast. This year's event will be held April 26th at the Hyatt Regency in Bellevue. Funds raised at the breakfast cover the cost of uncompensated care, and underfunded programs, particularly those aimed at education and prevention.
It's easy to get involved--you can attend the breakfast, your company can sponsor a table for $1,500 or you can host a table and invite 9 friends to an inspiring morning. Your help is needed more than ever due to cuts in government support and the difficult economy. So mark your calendar and be a Champion for Youth!

The numbers are in--YES saw a 24% increase in the number of kids and families who need received care but had no means to pay for treatment. In additon, we provided direct services to 7% more kids in 2010 than 2009--all of this with less government funding. Your help is needed more than ever. Please consider joining us for our Invest in Youth Breakfast. Help us raise awareness of the needs Eastside kids have for mental health and substance abuse intervention and help YES build healthier families and a healthier community.
Sincerely, Patti Skelton-McGougan Executice Director |
