Pleasant Hill Rec Turns 60! Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park District celebrated Recreation Month and its 60th Anniversary in July with the 4th of July Parade; its first-ever "Family Camp Out" at Pleasant Oaks Park on July 9; and by sponsoring the July 10 "Concert at the Lake" performance.
Justin Pitcher, Logistics Director for the 4th of July Commission, reported that Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park District had eight (that's right! eight!) entries in the parade on Monday, July 4. Justin said the highlight for him of this year's 4th of July celebration was the opportunity for the community to nominate the parade's Grand Marshall. Ted Winslow was selected for his impact on the community over the years. Ted served both as Board Member and General Manager of Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park District and has served for many years on the Pleasant Hill Community Foundation. He is a past president of the Pleasant Hill Chamber and was a faculty member at DVC. Ted rode in two floats in the parade - one with his wife Suzy in his role as Grand Marshall and one as a long- standing member and Past President of the Pleasant Hill Lions Club. "Camp Pleasant Hill" ...Family Camp Out Beginning at 3 pm on Saturday, July 9, two hundred and twelve campers arrived with tents, sleeping bags, and camping gear at Pleasant Oaks Park for the District's first Family Camp Out. After every- one had set up camp, Teen and Special Events Supervisor Katrina Hunn and her team began organizing group games including a Water Balloon Toss and a rousing parents vs. kids game of Dodge Ball. Later, while some families cooked dinner on their camp stoves, others purchased their meals at Pleasant Hill Baseball Association's snack shack. After dinner and more games, everyone gathered around the campfire, sang songs, and feasted on those special toasted marshmallows, s'mores! After the sun set, the group settled in for an outdoor movie. The next morning, breakfast was served at the snack shack and "Camp Pleasant Hill" broke around 10 am. Mark Celio and his family were among the campers. He said, "My family really enjoyed spending the night with 150+ neighbors. Any night that includes games, guitars, an outdoor movie, s'mores, and sleeping in a tent is perfect for me. Even my four- week old, Vinny, had a great time." When asked if the Family Camp Out will be held again, Katrina answered, "Absolutely!" In the Beginning ... In 1951, visionary residents of the newly-built Gregory Gardens subdivison established Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park District. This "Special District," formed ten years before the City of Pleasant Hill, was established to fill their need for recreation and parks to serve their families. Since those early days the District has had one clear mission: "To serve the diverse recreational needs of individuals and families and to enrich the quality of life for all residents, the Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park District is committed to providing park facilities, open space, and programs and activities for all ages." This year on July 13, the five- member board of directors of Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park District approved a resolution declaring July to be Recreation Month and recognizing that Parks Make Life Better in Pleasant Hill. The resolution urges all citizens to use and enjoy our parks and recreational opportunities. Read the resolution for yourself here.
