Where is Education Headed in Texas |
Hi, Welcome to another episode of Torres TV, I'm Raul Torres your host and your state representative.
Today, we begin a new series. Over the next month we will take an in-depth look at our public education system. And we'll begin by looking at the performance of our schools' K-12 programs over the past 10 years.
Next we will examine the current state of affairs in our public education system followed by a look at what the future may hold for public Ed in Texas.
I would like to wrap-up our series with ideas I have for how we best move public Ed forward.
Since I've been active in politics I have heard most politicians promise the voters that if you vote for them they will improve education.
Why? Because they know that's what you want to hear.
But, the truth is nobody has solved the problem. They only continue to put what I believe are temporary fixes on it. This is wrong.
Apart from public safety, nothing is more important than education. That's why I voted against the state budget - because it did nothing to fix the problems our children's schools face.
In fact, the budget again failed to provide the necessary funds to properly educate the children of South Texas. Now I am not saying that money alone is the answer, but as far as I am concerned, South Texas has received less than its fair share of education funding for too long. That must change.
Making sure we have a 21st century educational system that will allow our students to be competitive in the global marketplace is vital to the future of our families and our entire state. Education directly impacts our families' standard of living. It is the key driver for our state's fiscal well being. And our businesses and industries all over the state depend on it for the necessary workforce they demand!
We must solve the problems facing our schools. Our Children's future can't afford more empty promises. Time is critical if Texas is to remain the best place to live and work in America.
That is why I am presenting this series on education. And why I am running for re-election. Well, that's all for now. Thank you for viewing this week's episode of Torres TV. |
