NBA All-Star Weekend
This February, the NBA is bringing one of the most entertaining sporting events back to Orlando - NBA All-Star 2012. Returning for the first time since 1992, when Magic Johnson made his dramatic comeback on the court, NBA All-Star 2012 is a once-in-a-lifetime event celebrating current and former greats. Over the course of a week, the NBA will showcase its three leagues (NBA, WNBA, and NBA Development League), celebrate our athletes and give back to the Orlando community through various NBA Cares events.
NBA All-Star Jam Session, in Orlando from February 23 - 26, is THE marquee fan event of NBA All-Star! Jam Session is non-stop basketball action for fans of all ages! Fans can shoot, slam and dribble all day, compete in skills challenges and collect FREE autographs from NBA Players and Legends.
In addition to Jam Session, tickets are now on-sale for NBA All-Star Saturday Night, the Sprint All-Star Celebrity Game, NBA Rising Stars Challenge and the NBA All-Star Practice.

If that is not enough, Walt Disney World is hosting the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend February 24-26. In addition, starting the same weekend, ESPN Wide World of Sports hosts the Pro Soccer Classic which features eight professional soccer teams, including six from Major League Soccer and our hometown Orlando City Soccer.
Capping the end of the football season, the Sports Commission hosted a panel discussion titled the Business of Football. This sold-out event was staged on February 9th and featured a panel of experts and industry professionals discussing the increasing impact of the football industry on our community. Moderated by Josh Mora, Sports Marketing & Media Program Director at Full Sail University, the panelists include Dan Aton (XOS Digital), Tom Goedde (EA SPORTS), and Brett Bouchy (Orlando Predators). Special thanks to Cross, Fernandez, and Riley and Gray Robinson for sponsoring the Business of Football.
Thank you for your continued support, as we continue to market Orlando and Orange County as the "Ultimate Sports Destination".

As mentioned in last month's impact report, the Central Florida Sports Commission sent representation to two (2) national conventions. The first was the US Lacrosse Convention which was staged in Philadelphia. Billed as "the unofficial start to the lacrosse season," this event gathers the very best the sport has to offer, and provides the sport's largest educational opportunity, with over 5,000 coaches, officials, program administrators and exhibitors in attendance each year. This convention provided the Sports Commission the opportunity to network with potential event organizers and coaches that might be interested in booking one of our various venues within the City of Orlando and Orange County.
The same week, we sent staff to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Convention in Kansas City. Billed as "The World's Largest Annual Gathering of Soccer Coaches," the NSCAA Convention typically draws approximately 4,000 coaches from our 30,000-plus members, and more than 9,000 attendees. Like the US Lacrosse Convention, this convention provided the Sports Commission the opportunity to promote our area assets to interested parties that might want to book the Citrus Bowl or one of our other multi-purpose venues for an event or team training.
In other news, the Sports Commission plans to send representation to the upcoming SEC Men's Basketball Tournament that will be staged in New Orleans in early March. As mentioned in previous impact reports, the Sports Commission, in partnership with the Amway Center, City of Orlando and Orlando Magic, are interested in submitting a bid to host the tournament in either 2016 and/or 2017. We expect an updated RFP to be distributed by the SEC to interested communities by this summer. Over 15,000+ room nights would be generated in our community should we have the privilege to host this marquee event. Look for more updates in future impact reports.

The Sports Commission recently submitted a proposal to USA Taekwondo with respect to hosting their 2013 Junior and Senior National Championships at the Orange County Convention Center. The event would be staged over the July 4th week, and would attract over 10,000+ athletes, coaches, spectators and officials to Orlando. The Sports Commission hosted the Junior and Senior National Championships last in Orlando in 2010, with the event generating over $7 million in economic impact. We should hear something from USA Taekwondo by this July. Keep your fingers crossed!
In addition, the Sports Commission recently met with the Orlando Predators with respect to potentially bidding to host the 2013 or 2014 Arena Bowl. The Arena Bowl is the Arena Football League's championship game, with the top 2 teams in the league vying for the coveted title of league champion. The Amway Center would be the host venue, with dates of the Arena Bowl typically being in mid August. Details are still being worked out, but the game could attract fans from across the United States to Orlando, as the 2011 game staged in Phoenix, Arizona had over 14,000 fans in attendance. In addition, the game is televised live on the NFL Network. Proposals are due to the league by this summer, so stay tuned!
