A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM BRENT | |
On behalf of the Central Florida Sports Commission, I would like to thank each of our partners for your continued support which made 2011 a very successful year for us in our entire region. We are excited about what 2012 will bring, and how we can continue to market our regions assets as a premiere destination for sports related events and meetings.
The New Year brings new opportunities to Central Florida. The Sports Commission has had a busy January with travel to two industry trade shows, where we were able to provide many new event prospects for our community. The first was the US Lacrosse Convention in Philadelphia from Jan 13 - 15th. Billed as "the unofficial start to the lacrosse season," this event provided the sport's largest educational opportunity, with over 5,000 coaches, officials, program administrators and exhibitors in attendance. The same week we sent staff to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Convention in Kansas City. Billed as "The World's Largest Annual Gathering of Soccer Coaches," the NSCAA Convention drew approximately 4,000 coaches and more than 9,000 attendees over five days. Like the US Lacrosse Convention, this convention allowed the Sports Commission to promote our area assets to interested parties that might want to book one of our multi-purpose venues for an event or team training.
As we roll into February, Central Florida will be on top of the world sports stage with three enormous events: NBA All-Star, Daytona 500, and Disney's Princess Half Marathon. Stay tuned for a recap from these events in next month's newsletter. As always, we continue to market Central Florida to event organizers across the country, so read about some of our recent activity below. |

Based on this successful event, we look forward to working with MCFFU on developing a long term partnership. |

SENIOR GAMES IN OSCEOLA
The Sports Commission recently submitted a bid to host the 2013-14 Florida Senior Games in Osceola County. We worked with the Kissimmee Convention & Visitors Bureau, City of Kissimmee Parks & Recreation Department and the City of St. Cloud, among other partners, in compiling the bid. The Games, which occur in December, encompass 19 different sports over 10 days, so we have to utilize various facilities throughout Osceola County to accommodate this multi-sport festival. In 2010, the Florida Senior Games had 2,239 participants and generated over 1,000 + room nights. We hope to have a positive report in the coming months, so stay tuned!

SEMINOLE LOVES TENNIS
|
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has announced that Cindy Harkins of Longwood was selected as a 2011 USTA Eve F. Kraft Community Service Award recipient. Cindy has been instrumental in the growth of the Seminole County tennis community. Prior to 1975, Seminole County did not have one public tennis court. Today, there are 54 public courts. Cindy established Red Bug Park in 1976 and had the privilege of actively serving on the committee to select, plan, and develop Sanlando Park, which opened in 1978. Cindy was honored at the USTA Community Tennis Development Workshop held January 13-15 in New Orleans. We'd like to thank Cindy, as she is a HUGE part of our success in the tennis world for Seminole County!

NEW BUSINESS IN VOLUSIA
|
The Sports Commission has been researching the opportunity to potentially host the 2012 Skyhoundz SE Regional Championships and the 2012 Florida State Frisbee Dog Championships in Daytona Beach. The Regional Championships would be staged April 14-15, and would include more than 100 team entries (both owner and dog) from across the southeast. The State Championship would consist of more than 75 entries. An open park (or grass) area that is dog friendly is the preferred venue to host one of these events. Stay tuned! |
