A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM BRENT | |
Kick off the New Year with sports! We hope that 2012 is off to a fantastic start for you and your family! So far in 2012, we have a lot exciting events and news. Here at the Central Florida Sports Commission we are gearing up for a great year with sporting events that will entertain and bring even more economic development to Volusia County. For more information on the events that are on the business development front, along with some future business trips, please see the In the Pipeline section.
The Daytona International Speedway is off to a very busy start as well with the Rolex 24. Speedway President Joie Chitwood has described the Rolex 24 as the Super Bowl of racing. To prep for the race, the Speedway allowed race fans and opportunity to get up close with race teams from the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series and the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. Fans were allowed to interact with drivers and teams during the Rolex Series practices which took place January 6th through January 8th. For more information on the Rolex 24, please click HERE.
Although the holidays have passed, the season of giving continues. Whether you are interested in donating materials, money, or time, the United Way of Volusia and Flagler County is always in need of support. The UWVF is one of more than 1,800 locally independent United Ways in the United States and throughout the world. By using cost-effective fundraising and community building programs and services, the UWVF is able to help thousands each year in Volusia County. If you are interested in getting involved visit www.unitedway-vfc.org.
Happy New Year! |

IN THE PIPELINE |
The Central Florida Sports Commission is sending representation to two (2) national conventions this month. The first is the US Lacrosse Convention which will be staged in Philadelphia from Jan 13 - 15th. Billed as "the unofficial start to the lacrosse season," this event gathers the very best the sport has to offer, and provides the sport's largest educational opportunity, with over 5,000 coaches, officials, program administrators and exhibitors in attendance each year. This convention will provide the Sports Commission the opportunity to network with potential event organizers and coaches that might be interested in booking one of our various venues within Volusia County.
The same week, we will be sending staff to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Convention in Kansas City. Billed as "The World's Largest Annual Gathering of Soccer Coaches," each year the NSCAA Convention draws approximately 4,000 coaches from our 30,000-plus members, and more than 9,000 attendees over five days. Like the US Lacrosse Convention, this convention will allow the Sports Commission to promote our area assets to interested parties that might want to book one of our multi-purpose venues in Volusia County for an event or team training.
In addition, the Sports Commission has been researching the opportunity to potentially host the 2012 Skyhoundz SE Regional Championships and the 2012 Florida State Frisbee Dog Championships. The Regional Championships would be staged April 14-15, and would include more than 100 team entries (both owner and dog) from across the southeast. The State Championship would consist of more than 75 entries. An open park (or grass) area that is dog friendly is the preferred venue to host one of these events. We hope to set up a site visit with event organizers at our area venues in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
As we look ahead, the Sports Commission will be meeting with Daytona International Speedway to review in more detail last year's Daytona Beach Half Marathon and hopefully set the 2012 date. Look for your "save the date" information shortly! |

The Sports Commission recently reviewed an RFP from Metro Competitor Flag Football Union regarding the opportunity to host the 2012 MCFFU Flag Football World Championship. All year teams compete for the opportunity to qualify for this event, which typically attracts approximately 1,500+ players, fans and staff to the host community. The tournament requires 6 regulation soccer fields with lights and due to a lack of facility availability in Volusia County over the requested dates, we had to pass on submitting a proposal. We will take another look at this opportunity for Volusia County in 2013. |

COMMUNITY PROFILE | |
Volusia County locals are doing great things in the National Football League. The Seabreeze High School graduate and Bethune Cookman's own Eric Weems is making his third playoff appearance with the Falcons, and New Orleans Saint Johnny Patrick, who graduated from Deland High School, is headed to the playoffs as a rookie. Patrick made a big contribution in the NFC South Champion Saints' last three wins and is expected to play in his first playoff game. Lastly, former Seabreeze High School and Florida State kicker, Sebastian Janikowski had a great season and although he will not be in the playoffs, he will be in the Pro bowl for this first time in his 12-year career. Congratulations to all of you on a great season and best of luck!
